I think you will find the carpet on ebay is the same as what you will get from all the big carpet places, ive had vinyl and carpets from ebay and the quality is just has good if not better.
All you have to do is buy it from a reputable power seller with plenty of good feedback, a lot of these big carpet shop sell their carpets on ebay.
If your trying to keep the cost down, then ebays the way to go, but if you want to get ripped get your self down the big carpet places, did they offer you scotch guard???0 -
Ask the seller to send a small patch sample.
Half price is usually a marketing gimmick.
If I sell you a £1 coin for £2.20 you might consider it a rip-off. Mark it up as half price and you'll save £1.10 and I make 10p profit. A win-win?

i am a LL and always put underlay down - you can buy cheapish carpet, and with a good underlay (Cloud9) you will triple the life of the carpet - but i never buy cream carpet ....0

Great advice - as always.
I don't know why they even make cream carpet.
The carpet in my bungalow is terracotta. I bought it from a local, family run carpet shop and paid for top quality underlay. We remove outdoor shoes at the door and the carpet looks as good as new (except in the hall where it is showing its age). I might get it up and replace the underlay when I decorate the hall in Spring.

Used a local shop and went with the cloud 9 underlay.... apparently very good....
..except trying to get my partner to remember to remove his shoes all the time and NOT spill the tea has proven harder... Luckily the carpet came with a leaflet from the manufacturer detailing ways to remove all kinds of stains from it! lolKavanne

i always use small local shops as well.. huge retailers have a loss-leading £ per sq meter and then rack up the fitting costs so you end up paying a lot more
i put down deep red / dark blue / olive green carpets - sometimes with a tiiny fleck pattern
if you put cheap carpets down on manky, creaky, odd old floor boards, (with no underlay) then cheap carpet will wear holes in it in no time.... similarly if you put cheap carpet direct onto concrete, the carpet will hole quickly and the room will not be as "warm"0 -

Yes it is.
Bear in mind at places like Carpetright etc they discount every carpet in store. The mark-up from 'buy in' price to 'sale price' is huge, about 4-500%. Then they discount it by 1/3 or 50%. I believe they currently have a 50% + an extra 20% sale (60% off in total).
These shops NEVER discount underlay/gripper rods/doorbars. This is an area they make huge profit in which can cover the loss-leading discounts they offer on the carpets themselves. Someone like Volante Flooring (http://www.volanteltd.co.uk/) will offer you proper advice and not charge you prices that are marked up for maximum profit as they are used by all the local fitters and professionals.0 -
Ask a local carpet fitting company about fibre-backed carpeting. It's like carpet with a hardwearing underlay bonded to the underside. Not as comfy but appropriate for rentals. A friend of mine (in Bristol) can do it for £12/sqm fitted.I'm an ARB-registered RIBA-chartered architect. However, no advice given over the internet can be truly relied upon since the person giving the advice hasn't actually got enough information to give it with confidence. Go and pay someone!0

This might be a bit late me posting but you definately need an underlay under your carpet... it saves the wear & tear & adds comfort feel for your carpet.
If your tight on budget, Felt Underlays are the best bet... try eBay or www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk is where we bought from.
If you can, try fitting it yourself to save you £££, but a carpet fitter is always best to play safe with0
