Reversing the wrong way out of a one way road

The other day I watched one of the local councils camera cars (The Smart Cars that enforce traffic offences etc). Drive into a one way road and then reverse approx 30 yards out of the one way road onto a main road.

What are the legalities of this as I'm tempted to report it to the relevant people at the local council as it will be devine justice. I'm hoping they will even have filmed themselves doing it.

Cheers

Well, technically, they broke the Road Traffic Act by driving the wrong way down the street. Depends how much you want to stir it :)

Probably not illegal but downright dangerous to reverse onto a main road. Although it never stops householders doing regularly.

Can I reverse into a one way street with a No Entry sign? For example to turn around or even park up near the mouth of the No Entry strreet?

It is not illegal to reverse IN a one way street, but you are not allowed to reverse into a one way street through a No Entry sign. No Entry means just that (not even side ways in a power slide :) )

  • Pretty sure it is illegal to reverse on a one way street because a bin man round here knocked a man over and killed him doing this and was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was jailed for 15 months.

Nothing to do with one way streets
The prosecution said he was to blame because he failed to use any of the safety precautions he had been trained to use, including a reversing bleeper and a camera which would have given him a view of what was happening behind.

Illegal to drive wrong way down a one way street irrespective of the direction the vehicle is pointing it is the direction of travel that causes the offence.

He was jailed for 15 months.

And his excuse? "but that's the way I've always done it".
    Idiot.

As !!!!!! says - he wasn't punished for driving the wrong way in a one way street - he was punished for not using the appropriate safety procedures.

The one way means precisely that - one way.
It doesn't mean "two way but facing only one way". I'd have thought reversing down a one way street is illegal and the only reversing permitted would be to manouevre within a parking space.

Highway code forbids reversing into a main road in any case, I think

If I recall it used to qualify that reversing onto any highway of higher grade was forbidden, ie from lane to street from street to road or even driveway to highway, not sure if this still applies today.
