Fan for an Ideal Classic N40

Hi Folks

I am currently waiting for a quote to replace a fan on the Ideal Classic N40.

I would appreciate a rough guestimate as to what to expect he is gonna quote. For supply and fitting.

Also,
The engineer came and got the current fan going by drowning it in WD40. So at least we have a working boiler which is buying me a bit more time (cant risk having no boiler with a 2 year old and pregnant wife to keep warm!!)

Can you recommend any sites to buy the fan myself?

How difficult is it to replace the fan myself??
Is it just a bolt off/on job or is it more technical/specialist than that??

All advice welcome.

there appears to be about 6 x fan models for the classic range of boilers.
they range from 75 to over 200 quid!
ideal used to charge 180 quid call out fee, plus parts.

id be fitting my own bloody fan.
    Get some gorm.
  • I am quickly beginning to come to the same conclusion.

Cheapest fan supplier I have found so far is a shade under £200 including delivery.

I presume around £100 to fit.

I think aslong as you dont have to mess about with too much, I may just go for it.

Or I could just buy 200 tins of WD40 and keep spraying the !!!!!!!!!!
  • My Fan has just gone ... fitted last one in 2005.
I paid £78 last time - will post details if they are still similar.
Takes 30 mins to fit - easy!

    Good point!!

Update .. since the WD didn't work, I've nothing to loose ..
I've stripped down the fan assembly and the motor ( it was HARD work )!

The Rotary Fan blade is secured with an Allen key grub screw, but the shaft was still held on extremely tight - maybe they had used a shaft locking adhesive - but it did come off eventually.
The cooling fan blade ( not on all assemblies aparantly ) was equally hard to remove.

Having got it all apart - there are two bearings marked as type NSK 626Z1X. The inner bearing was well seized - clearly the fault.

There are plenty of these types of bearing on the net for a couple of pounds - so I'm going to replace both. Fingers crossed!

Also I think British gas do a 1 off fee for a boiler repair which works out at £192.Dont usually recommend them for work but some times this can work in your favour especially if the part is expensive

It hasn't been CORGI for a while now - it's GAS SAFE REGISTER.
