Shopping for student in USA

Our son is studying in USA and he needs to buy a few items for his dorm and a laptop. I thought it would be better to buy them directly in USA so he does not have to carry them from here.
It will have to be on line, since he does not own a car, lives in the campus and is busy most of the time.
The only internet shopping site I know in USA is Amazon, but I've had a look and their prices for household items seem quite high compared, for instance, with IKEA. Can anybody recommend other shopping sites?
And regarding the laptop, which would be a good one? My last experience with DELL here in England has been bad, and if something goes wrong he needs a good after sales service.
I do not know if this is the right forum to publish this question, but could not find a more suitable one.
Thanks a lot for any help and I wish you all a Happy 2010!

I was going to suggest Walmart as they do something like Argos Click & Collect - but he would need to get a lift there - I suppose he could wait till everything you ordered was in & collect it in one trip. Walmart have a good range of laptops.
****sighs***** fondly remembering our trip in a hired car with our son & a student pal on the Boulevard Peripherique in Paris seaching for one of the 5 Ikeas in Paris to get stocked up for his 5 month student exchange.0 -
Thanks Zebradome! That's a good idea... maybe he can get a lift from a mate... I'll try to find out what stores are near the campus...0

There will no doubt be a Walmart or a Target store nearby where you can get basic essentials. Possibly best to buy a cheap laptop over there (no need for anything fancy) since the voltage and such is very different.0

laptops have internal transformers. the only thing that would need changing when bringing back a laptop from the us would be the plug. (you can buy those quite cheaply).0 -
I studied abroad and there isn't a lot you really need assuming he may already have a lot of things from studying here previously?
Folders etc are useful, but be careful about buying too much stuff as lot of it he can probably get on campus and will probably end up being chucked away at the end of his exchange (unless hes doing his whole degree there?).0 -
Walmart deliver, I think...not sure about Target...there's also Best Buy (pretty sure that's what it's called). Is there someone at university he can speak to who would be able to recommend a decent aptop with the specs he'd require for university?0

Yeah Best Buy is a huge electronics shop, I found things were generally cheaper online like at Amazon though (much like Currys or PC world here).
There's plenty of advice you can get online about PC Spec, or in the Techy Forums in here. If he's just doing word processing for coursework etc it doesn't really need to be all that powerful anyway so for one for a few hundred dollars would be fine.0 -
Yes I recently purchased my laptop from USA and it was through online discount. I would suggest you to search for online savings and you should purchase a Dell Piece as I made my purchase from Dell by using Dell Promo Codes. hope you will find all what you want. There are also some stores providing different deals and Price Comparison like plaza101.com and Google price comparison so there a number of options you can check and if you are satisfied go for it.:).......................Enjoy this beautiful life by increasing your savings...........................:j0
