Silly Question About Belkin Router!

My neighbor has a Belkin router for Christmas with her new laptop.

This is it, I don't know the model number here it was on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270498178229

She unplugged her old modem (Thompson Talktalk Speedtouch) from her desktop.

Does she still need to utilize the modem or does the Belkin device have a modem built into it?

When we connect the BT lead from the wall into the Belkin all lights fire up that should except for the data light at the end which is red.

Any ideas?!

Thanks!

You can see the RJ11 cable there so i would imagine its a router with modem built in.

And it does state ADSL wireless router.

Could you have a look underneath the router it should have a model no there,
    edit,

Just had a look at the photo, it looks like a modem router, You will need to connect the laptop to the router through a network cable, and sign in to the Belkin router page, type http://192.168.2.1/ into the search box, from there press Submit and at the top LOGIN, here you need to tye your isp sign in name and password, that should get you connected. hth, Alan.

You probably need to configure it with the login and password. To access the configuration page try typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 into your browser.

    If that doesn't work
Go to a Command Prompt (Start button>Run>type 'CMD') and then type 'ipconfig/all' at the black screen.
Your default gateway (the address of your router) will be displayed there. It will be a variation of 192.168.x.x

The password may be on the back of the router, otherwise try Admin (or google it). It may need resetting as it may be locked to the previous ISP. If you can still access the internet check your ISP page for info on how to set up a new router
  • Hmm yes you are virtually all right....I will distribute thanks!

It is a modem router...and it has been set up and is seeing the laptop, however there is no data flow.

The light under the phone symbol is green but under the world symbol is red.

The internet does work from her desktop via the modem router box.

I took the router to my home and plugged into the phone line here, two green lights almost straight away.

Its almost like her phone line has no internet signal coming through it, but it does work with her old modem. Mad!
  • I'm suddenly think could it be leads? could try replacing leads from phone point all way through to back of router/modem...though if there was a problem with the leads would the light under the phone sign be green?
