Wedding food!

Hey everyone,

I'll be (hopefully) getting married in July! I have already found loads of amazing money-saving tips in a thread on here but I have a specific question for you people...

At the moment, our guestlist stands at about 80 people (let's say 100 to make it easier) at the reception, as we would like quite a big reception. The only thing that frustrates me is that the catering is going to be probably the biggest expense around - my mum thinks the buffet is going to work out as about £2,000! As she's estimated that it will cost about £20 per person.

I don't really see how it comes to that much, we have friends with Costco etc cards so surely we could do it for much cheaper than 2k?

Thanks in advance x

  • Yes but that means that you will be cooking on your wedding day. It's just one of those expenses I'm affraid. Why not come over to the wedding forum and we'll see if we can help more. :)

  • will certainly be a good buffet at £20 a head, lol!

why not get a couple of caterer's menus and see how much the quantities of food can be bought for?

If you don't want to cook perhaps friends would do it as a 'gift' ?

I can't find the wedding forum :o if you could point me in the right direction that would be great. :)

I won't be the one cooking on our wedding day, we have friends who are more than happy to help with that and it will definitely be cheaper than getting caterers in! But really, 2,000??

we spent sbout half of our outgoings on the food - about £2500 for 70 guests. Yes, it's loads but do you really want to be cooking on your wedding day? Making that amount of food would be a huge effort. Where would you do it too?

    Good luck :D

That's what I thought, surely £20 per person is a bit too much? We want nice stuff but cheap at the same time. And we do have several friends cooking for us on the day :)

Just to add, our venue is charging us £6.25 (after haggling) PP for 60 and they will still make a profit so it can be done! Ask a Mod to move this to the Wedding board as I know others are catering themselves and will have better ideas than me!

We did a huge buffet for 100 people for around £100. We had a few chefs hard at work for a couple of hours though - hubbys a chef and called in some favours, others volunteered insted of a wedding present. We had pizza's, sandwiches, quiches, tortillas, drumsticks, nachos, eclairs, fruit skewers (huge hit) We had strawberrys and grapes on sticks they looked so effective with yogurt or cream dip! Cake we cut 2 tiers. Theres was lots of food left though :(
