Garmin v Navman

I'm looking at getting a sat nav with lane assistance and traffic information. Neither my OH or I particularly like the TomTom so have narrowed it down to Garmin Nuvi 1300T or Navman S505D.

I personally prefer the Navman as I have borrowed my brother in law's S50 and I like the view better than a Garmin/TomTom but my OH likes the Garmin as it's more popular. Both have similar features but we can't make a decision!

Can anyone help??

Thanks.

  • i feel it is my duty to tell anyone who will listen how bad Garmin is. Mine takes about 3 hrs to find a signal. I am usually at the destination before the thing come on.

    TomTom is probably the best.

I tested the theory in USA as well, and the Garmin (a different one) was still incredibly slow.

My pet name for the garmin, is the garbage.

Garmin is the best we've found. We've driven around half of North America with one, and it has never missed so much as a turn.

  • just leave halford alone ;)
total pda does refurbished ones with 1 year manifacturer guarantee, and im sure half of the price that you d spend on halford.
garmin or tom tom or sat nav.

i know tom tom are prone to breaking down, but to my opinion they far more ahead of garmin etc, 70 quid tom tom with iq routes, if it breaks down after a year then be it

I've owned both and - more critically for me - have had to use the Customer Services of both. Garmin were excellent, TomTom customer services were completely useless.

I prefer Garmin, particularly for the non-techie, as the user interface is simpler in general. They may be slightly less sensitive as they seem to have trouble in (mainly French) cars with metallised windscreens, but even then, once they lock onto the satellites they have no trouble maintaining lock. The trick there is to give it a minute or so to acquire before putting it in the car if you have that type of screen.

With Garmin, you pay £95 for 3 updates per year for as long as you own the unit.
With Navman, they only provide updates for 2 years or until they change the hardware platform (whichever comes first).

If you are likely to really on a satnav a lot, then the Garmin is your best bet. I bought one 2nd-hand, and the battery life is incredible at 4 hours on a full charge. It finds the sattellite signal in under 10 seconds too.

  • For me its Garmin, must be 4yrs old and good as gold. Brought DD hers a few yrs ago. Garmin is used on Land Sea and Air, I don't think TT is in the same league.

I need one with a headphone jack (for my motorbike) and neither of these provide a unit with that. Some I'm plumping for the Binatone X430 or D430 (just incase you'd not considered other brands).
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.
