    Hey mate

    I've done this

On every loan/credit application it asks for your previous surname

Also, they won't give you credit unless they can find a history of your existence at a string of previous addresses over the past 5 or 10 years. (i think)

Like when chinese people come to study here... they open an international account and slowly slowly build up a credit record with a bank.

You'd have to declare bankrupcty, pay all the court fees, then change your name.

You need a deed poll document. You are obliged to write to your banks as soon as you change your name

I'd also get a new passport (take the deed poll form with you) - book an appointment at a UK passport office = pay £96 for the 4 hour service..

In Scotland you can call yourself anything you want as long as it's "not for the purposes of deception". You don't even need to change it by deed poll. Hmmm...who do I want to be next week?

  • Hi Mate. Thanks for the reply.

Yes i am in the process of gettting a deed poll from deedpollsonline.co.uk so that should be through within the next few days.

I am still not clear on if i have a new name do i get a new credit profile. If i change my name , then tell all the companys i have stuff with like , Gas , Electricity , Mobile Phone , BT , Broadband etc that i have changed my name and then say in a few months apply for say a Credit Card but only give my new name will they look at my new credit profile?

As i said before and it was a few years ago that a guy i used to work with did it that way and he could then apply for stuff ok.

    What do you think?

When you changed your name did you put on the application forms your old name?

Thanks for your info and time

You can in England & Wales too, the 'deed of change of name' merely acts as proof to institutions who require it.

Thats really my question if you do not declare it does a new credit profile just get created with your new details? , ok it might be a bit blank

I am not asking all this for ilegal reasons i am just interrested and i am changing my surname for 100% legal reasons

Thanks for all the replies and for any further info :-)

This is not true, as you are still the same person, and your details are still available on the electroal register under your new name, and as this is one of the things your credit file is linked to, then no, you will still have the same credit profile.

And, as the documents from the UK Deed Poll office state, AND on the deedpoll certificate, you are required to relinquish the use of your old name entirely.

Really, however your credit rating is, a fraud conviction will only make it worse!

Yes, you have to put it on. Not only that, the deed of name changed certificate states your old name on there too.

    It reads:
By this deed of change of name made by myself the undersigned (your new name) of (your address) formerly known as (your current name)

    Hereby declare as follows:

    1. I absolutely and entriely renounce, relinquish and abandon the use of my former name of (your current name) and assume, adopt and determine to take and use from the date hereof the name of (your new name) in subsititution of my former name of (Your current name).

    2. I shall at all times hereafter in all records, deed, documents and other writings and in all actions and proceedings, as well as in all dealings and transactions and all occasions whatsoever use and subscribe to the said name of (your new name) as my name, in substitution for my former name of (your current name) so relinquished as aforesaid to the intent that I may hereafter be called, known, or distinguished by the name of (your new name) only and not by my former name of (your current name).

    3. I authorise and require all persons at all times to designate, describe and address me by the adopted name of (your new name).

So in order to change your name, you HAVE to declare your current one.

I wonder how many times we are going to have to state that on these boards before the message gets through.

Also the message that the only deed to prove change of name that is is required is a statutory declaration, the wording for which is freely available on the internet and will cost just £5 to take to a solicitor for the signature to be witnessed.

Please could I say that some people are new to these boards and there are thousands of posts so sometimes the same questions will come up.
