Afternoon

1st of all don't want to claim or anything (Happy with my TV) just wondering how it works!

I have a 36 inch Sony CRT TV which I bought 7 years ago for £900. Obviously these TV's are no longer made now.

If this is knocked over and I need to claim what would the loss adjuster do?

Just wondering!

Thanks

usually the suppliers just find the closest possible match they have. Obviously wont cost that much to replace now.

If you dont like the match, dependng on your insurer they can issue cash or vouchers to what they think would have been the value at the time of loss.... obviously there would be depreciation to take into account.

Depends on the terms and conditons of your policy, whether you have new for old cover etc.

    Refer to your policy booklet

The loss adjuster may come out to see your tv and examine the breakage. A friend of mine is involved in insurance and she recently had some trining where they were talking about tv's, some people from the specialist insurance unit at her company spent some tim with loss adjusters and one of the things they did was try to break tv's and they said it wasn't as easy as you think, they are quite tough so a tv is likely to survive being knocked over or having something thrown at it. I was amazed and thought they broke really easily.

I'd have thought if they did come out and were happy to process a claim they'd replace it with a 36" TV with a minimum spec of your old one.

If your policy is new for old which most are these days they would offer a tv as close match as they could and I think they let you pay extra to upgrade. Insurance companies get discount from suppliers so if the tv they offered you was a Sony that would be £500 in the shops the insurance comapny might be able to get that for £300 fro example (No idea of the discounts to be honest). If you wanted cash instead the most they'd give you the £300 it would have cost them to replce the tv. Again not sure if they'd give you the full £300 or if they'd deduct anything from that as well

Strangely enough most of the broken tv claims I have seen are where they "drop" them down the stairs when "moving" the tv. Did the experts do that test?

Yes. They also pour everything from water to beer down the back of them, both whilst on and off, so that they can get a pattern of damage.

One company I used to have dealings with had done the same with laptops, pc base units!
