Hi all,
the DVD drive on my Advent laptop has died a death - it still reads dics (just, though it grumbles doing that!) but won't burn discs at all, and as a die hard backer upper of things I've downloaded, I'm getting a little anxious! Can you buy replacement drives for laptops? I have no idea as this has never happened to me before! I know you can do it for desktop PCs but they're all nice and clunky, not compact things like this! I wouldn't have a clue what I was doing! It's a few years old and is not under any warranty any more. Worth replacing the drive, or time to invest in a better laptop?

Yes, you can get them - known as slimline drives. Although they ~should~ all fit, you'll probably find that any trim panels originally fitted won't go back, and cosmetically it may not look that great (but who cares on an old laptop?). About £30 for a DVD R/W:

Personally I would leave it alone and buy a USB connected one in an external caddy, but that depends how portable you need it to be.0 -
