I would suggest that as soon as is possible take yourself into the local CAB office and see if they can help if not them then the Ageconcern offices they are there to help folk like you and your Mum The money if entitled to is yours for the asking The Gov. won't do much to offer it to you thats for sure. I was lucky in a way when I lost my husband in 2003 my DD and her friend sorted all my ginaces out for me and claimed for all sorts of things that I wouldn't have thought possible.her friend workd at the local DHSS which helped plus she had done something similar for her own Mum when her Dad had died.Do go and bang on doors and ask though you may be pleasantly suprised at the outcome

are they the people I caught on the tv not so long ago who carry out repairs and you sign an arrangement to say you will pay them if/when your house is sold?

I thought it was a brilliant scheme and they arranged professionals to carry out the work.

This might be worth a try - I found out that my gran may be able to get help with her windows via a local authority (district council) 'Home repair assistance grant' - just put your postcode in, and the other relevant details and see what it brings up that you may be eligable for:
