New Sofa - MSE style

I thought I would share with you my rather successful 'new sofa'.
I have a very old Ikea sofa which the cover is marked, stained and shabby. Its not removable. The sofa is now all saggy in addition. So a new sofa is needed but we cant afford one.
I noticed in Ikea that they sell a sofa cover which seemed approximately the right size for mine (its not the same sofa) and sort of the same shape around the arms, although not exact.

luckily for me, its the white cover i wanted which is the cheapest.
Now, my sofa is a 3 seater but only has 2 big seat cushions, rather than the 3 which the cover covers. It also doesnt have back square cushions, it has big scatter cushions which form the back.
So I put the main cover over the sofa, which fitted ok. Then I used the seat cushion covers to provide new covers for the 'scatter' cushions. I put a white throw over the base to cover the 2 seat cushions.
However, I have now discovered this...

so I am going to replace my seat cushions, getting 3, instead of the 2 big ones I have, so that they fit the seat cushion covers provided by Ikea.
I worked out that the foam will cost about 100, the cover cost 40, so I will have a new sofa for 140 quid.
Brilliant!! It will keep me going for ages again. the sofa is 12 years old, it can now go another couple of years until we can afford a new one.

It is a brilliant idea, thank you....
I bought a 2 and a 3 seater from EBay a couple of years ago for £120 from an elderly lady. She'd bought it from M&S but when it arrived she didn't like it, and kept it for less than a monght before reselling it - oh joy!
Aftyer a while I decided to replace the seat pads as they were just wadding in there. It cost £120 for the 4 seat pads. I just took them to the foam shop, went and did my shopping at Morrisons and when I finished went and picked them up.
The man had stuffed them on his machine as they are very tight and hard to do it yourself. So it might be worth checking to see if there's a local foam shop in your area.
Also it was easier to see the difference between the types of foam, I chose firm as I thought it would last longer, and for the first few weeks after having it done it felt hard to the backside but now it's perfect (my feet don't touch the floor when I sit right back lol)..
I will have a look at the covers on Ikea, it will save me getting the sewing machine out :cool:I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

yes, i want firm too, both me and OH are quite overweight so after a while, it will soften up and I dont like really soft sofas anyway
the measurements of the seat covers are not exactly the same as my sofa, but good enough, with a bit of wadding tucked down the back to push the seats forward to fit0
