Service unreliable Dyson or buy new (Henry)?

Options
Hi all,

Just wondering what to do. I've got an old unreliable Dyon stored in my dad's garage, which we replaced with a superlative Miele machine last year.

I'm moving out into my first home and obviously need a new vacuum cleaner, (and much as I'd like to I can't afford a Miele) so my question is....

Do I a) go for the cheaper option and get the old Dyson serviced at £69 and risk having a machine that is just as unreliable and rubbish at doing its intended job or...

b) Spend £40 more and go for a new Henry Xtra machine with the special turbo head and filter (online at £110)?

Has anyone had their Dyson serviced and has it improved matters? (On ours the suction was rubbish and was terrible at picking up the dog hairs, despite being the animal version).

Has anyone any experience of Henry machines - are they worth the money/reliable etc?

If not, can anyone suggest an alternative, which is bagged (I have dust allergies and the Dyson made me sneeze when I emptied it!), preferrably a pull-along, and has a tool for dog hairs?

BTW I have two collies so I need something with a niff filter too! :D

Many thanks in advance,

We've got a Henry and I love it. Have no pets so cannot comment on dog hairs but it's been able to keep up with the house being in a constant state of redecorating (lots and lots of plasterdust and everything in between!). Going strong for 2 years and we aren't gently with it either.

I bought a Henry 5 or 6 years ago and it has been absolutely brilliant, it is fairly clunky but it's a small price to pay and it happily goes under furniture. A few weeks ago Mum gave me her Dyson (nothing wrong with it, just upgrading to a ball) and I don't get on with it at all. It doesn't go to the edges properly, you have to use the tools for that and while it picks up an amazing amount of dust (which I think might be misleading because most don't have see through dust compartments) it doesn't like picking up anything bigger than that, it just pushes things round the kitchen.
I'd have a Henry again (if it ever needs replacing!) but I wouldn't buy a Dyson. I suspect loads of people are going to shoot me down now but that's just my opinion!
  • i have a dyson given to me by MIL.. i would never get another one. it's an upright, its heavy, hard to handle and the tube handle thingy is rubbish!! its so stiff and bulky that you cant get into any small gaps and the hoover itself doesnt work in the slightest on hard floors (you have to buy a special tool apparently). I hate empting it, its messy and awkward. the only good points are that it does do a good job on carpets, but i dont know if that is sufficient pay-off..

henry is henry.. we used to have one in my old houseshare.. i didnt get on with him either as he was constantly falling over when i tried to pull him along, but he did an ok job...

I have had 2 Dysons and now have a Henry - and bless him I wouldn't change back if I was given a Dyson.....much more efficient, easy to manouvre.....love Henry!

Having gone through 3 dysons in 6 years, we purchased a miele which I love. Not very money saving but we have a cleaner (mainly cause I have my own business and worked out I could spend more time earning money than trying to clean) - she has a henry which is fantastic.

Might be worth your while seeing if you know anyone with a Costco card - you can get the henry's cheaper there.

I had a dyson but found it kept breaking all the time, it was only a few months old & after returning it to dyson twice I cut my losses and got my money back.
I now have a Hetty (pink Henry) which I absolutely love, I have had it for about 6 months but never had any problems with it so far. It has excellent suction, picking up all the cat hair around my house & the bags can be bought cheaply on ebay. It is a lot smaller than my dyson so easy to store in my small flat.

I don't find uprights easier to use tbh, I can get in all the nooks & crannys around the place with my Hetty & for the price you absolutely can't go wrong!

  • Thanks for all your replies.

I think I'll go for the Henry - I've heard such terrible things about the Dysons that seem to reflect the experiences we've had with ours!

If I had the money for a Miele I wouldn't hesitate to buy one they're brilliant, however I'm on a tight budget after having to furnish the new house and needs must!!
