I am a fitness instructor: just buy the cheapest whey protein you can buy unless you are an athlete or professional bodybuilder. Most of the expensive brands have additives that simply aren't of benefit to the average keen gym goer (and in some cases are no better than a placebo). Mix with either milk powder or juice not water - you need the carbs to stimulate insulin for the amino acids to be absorbed, and to refuel your muscles.

  • Another myprotein fan here aswell.

You simply won't find it cheaper and you'll be hard pushed to find better. They are top drawer.

They sell samples of their whey aswell for a quid I think. Well worth ordering these as getting through a 5lb tub of a flavour you don't like is seriously hard work. :rotfl:

    +1 for myprotein.co.uk - if you look around you'll find a 5% off code.
  • Big myprotein fan

I like their bulk supplies, especially protein and instant oats.

They do sell a lot of supplements, but some of them are snake oil. Stick to the proven supplements such as Creatine, and BCAA

I think it depends what your looking for both in your workouts/training and moneywise- these things aren't cheap!

I use protein bars to get enough protein in my diet. If I had it all my way I'd just eat fresh fruit and steamed vegetables all day, but I get bloated with all that and think that if I don't eat protein bars, I will likely miss this from my diet. They are not calorie free though- about 200kcals per bar si as I'm trying to lose weight its important not to overeat and remember I cannot eat the same amount bulk-wise of protein bars as I could with fruit! (LOL) Its the same with protein shakes, if your trying to lose weight, watch the calories.
Protein bars and shakes were never meant to be a meal replacement- its important to remember that. If you do eat the same thing every day your doing your body no favors, it needs variation and also eating the same thing every day could be quite dull, hence its easy to overeat and this is also not good.

In terms of suppliment pills, the jurys out on that one. Some swear by them for muscle building, release of energy from food or other amazing claims. Others say they do nothing, that its all a placebo. Let me just explain by describing something that happened to me on wednesday.

Last week I saw in Tescos, loads of different diet, slimming and fitness training pills reduced to clear. I bought some pills for energy, they had various B-vitamins, various "this will help you build muscle, that will help you lose weight" and caffiene in them.

I took 2 portions of what I thought were some of each and wrapped them in tissue for taking later on that evening when I wanted to be at the gym(- bear in mind it was 8am and I had slept for about 2 hours.) The 10 hours before I got to the gym turned out to be a very slow day where I ached alot, was very uncoordinated and felt quite low in mood all day- made worse by a lack of energy levels. Not good for working out at the gym with.

On starting the gym, I had taken the pills 30 minutes beforehand as advised on the packet back home and began my workout.

It was an amazing workout, I really felt the pills had worked! I was able to get alot done and felt very energetic. I felt I should have felt bad for tricking my body into working out when it probably should have rested and a cheat for taking the pills but I was too pleased with what I had been able to achieve.:j

It was only when I got home I found out that I hadn't even opened the "slimming excercise pills" at all! I had taken Omega 3 oils to the gym instead!!!:o

So, again, the jurys out on the pills I think- at least its out for me!;)
