Missing driver

I have just formatted my PC and started over.Having thought everything was set up OK I have a problem with my sound (ie I have none).
In my Hardware Device Manager I have an exclamation mark against "C-Media AC97 Audio Device" (under the "Sounds, video and games controllers" heading).
Really frustrating ! I have had this once before on same PC several years ago but cannot remember how I fixed it. I have all my original install disks and have tried putting the "SiS/AMD Chipset Motherboard Utilities CD" back in but it just tells me that all the drivers are set upand wont let me reset them up.
Also tried right clicking on the particular driver in Device Manager and trying to Install from the disk (but not sure of right folder and had no success).
I have tried looking online to find a driver (looks like I need C-Media AC97 Audio Device Version 5.12.1.51).
I have spent a frustrating 5hrs on this now and would really appreciate it if someone out there could point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Mr F

I often have this problem, pm me and I will send you the offending attachment in email if you wish

Let me guess, you have a ks741gx motherboard?
