under what circumstances did he come to you? is he in education/training? At 17 he isn't usually entitled to claim job seekers so might not be much you can do.
  • Oh man, I love your signature lol.
He fought with my mam and she chucked him out. No training !!!!!! all, the lazy sod grr.
Don't wanna see him on the streets though. Might just make him do the housework till he realises getting a job is probabaly easier.

Errr Cos he's your brother?

As to "claiming for his living expenses". From whom? Or are you after some of that mythical substance "Government money" ??

Big news, Governments don't have any money - they get it from those of us that work for a living & pay tax - and no, I don't want to contribute to your brother's upkeep thanks very much. We're all kind of struggling enough to deal with the £1Bn the lunatics in Downing street are borrowing every 2 days!!

If you don't want to support your own family members why the hell should the rest of us? Either deal with it or wash your hands of it - but don't expect me to pay you to deal with it.

I quite agree! Why do people like the OP think other people should pay up all the time! Look after your own or yourself and the OP should tell their brother that too!

Please can I refer you to this quote by Mse Martin
This board is here for help and support for those on or looking to claim benefits, not for judgement.

Of course we all know the benefits system is a mess

Whatever you're political persuasion, we're all aware the benefits system is a mess. Whether its the malpayments of tax credits on one hand, benefit fraud on the other hand, or simply the fact that sometimes it doesn't pay to work - everyone has their grumble.

This board is here to help people with their money though..

Yet that isn't what this board is for. It's here to help people find out what they are entitled to under the current system, and to help them get it. Benefits do provide a lifeline for many, and this site is here to help people with their money, and not to judge. Of course, how to illegally defraud the benefits system shouldn't be discussed here, but ensuring you're getting your entitlement is exactly what its about.

Want to discuss the benefits system? Go to the discussion board

If you want to discuss the benefits system itself and issues around it, the appropriate place isn't here but the Discussion Board and even there, please remember courtesy and not to make it personal about anyone. This site's prime purpose it to help people with their money and I will always act to protect that.

    Thanks for your co-operation

    Martin

If you want to carry on debating benefit policies please feel welcome to start a new thread in the Discussion forum as you are taking this off topic and I will be forced to close this thread if it continues :)

If he's not in training he's best to register with connexions and apply for IS while searching for a job.

Thanks for that. Perfectly reasonable for people to ask about what they might be entitled to claim for......

....also perfectly reasonable (IMHO) for others to point out that even if you are "entitled" to claim for something (and in this case I don't believe the OP is anyway), that, morally, it might be somewhat reprehensible to do so.

A resource that just teaches people to take whatever they can get whether they need it or not does neither our society nor our country any good at all - especially at the moment. On the other hand, one that aligns good advice with social responsibility is a great thing. (IMHO of course ;) ).

"I mean i can afford him to stay with us but why should i?"

    QED.
  • Vis05, you have been asked by a Board Guide to discuss policy in Discussion Time, not here on the Benefits Board which is to advise people about Benefits that they are LEGALLY entitled to.

To the OP, your brother needs to get into Education/Training or a job. I agree with others that Connexions should be his next move. There are usually no Benefits available for 17-year-olds.
