Sal - is there any chance you can drive his car before the weekend to get a feel for it. I'll agree with the others in that they are easy to drive. Why have you got to drive it? (sorry - probably missed where you have said why.)

Sally - you can apply for a computer grant too if you get funded with The OU :)

Sally - I googled how to drive an automatic car when I swapped and then literally learnt it off to memory

    1. Ensure car is in Park (P)

    2. Put foot on brake

    3. Start engine

    4. Move gearstick to Drive (D) for forwards or Reverse (R) for backwards

    5. Release handbrake

    6. Move foot to accelerator

    Then just brake/accelerate as normal.

To park it (ie and get out)

    1. Bring to a stop by braking and keep foot on brake

    2. Put in Park

    3. Put handbrake on

    4. Take foot off brake

    5. Turn off the engine :D

My ex has got some ad hoc work as a driver for a motor home company. He's never driven an auto before and I offered to teach him last week. Literally took him about 2 minutes to get over his nerves of not being in a manual car and then he was fine.

On hills, remember, even if you brake to a stop, you won't roll back when you put your foot on the accelerator as you are always in First gear. You won't/can't stall. N is Neutral and is really only for towing. If it has D4, D3, D2, D1, pick D4. Some just have 'D', some have extra choices but you only need D or D4.

The most important bit is to have your foot on the brake when starting up. Otherwise, if you don't and you put it in gear and take the handbrake off you will start to move a bit.
