My daughter (17 yrs old) bought a silver bracelet for her sister (15 yrs) for Christmas. She pointed out that it was a bit small, but the lady told her to take it anyway and if its too small they could add some extra links to it.
It cost £25.00

It was too small, they took it back to the shop today wanting extra links put in, she was told it would cost £20 to do so..
My daughter was absolutely gobsmacked and asked for her money back so her sister could buy something else...
They refused the money back but offered her a credit note.. They looked in the shop for another bracelet, but they were all the same length..

She had the receipt and its original box and bag..
She brought the bracelet home, because she didnt know what to do..

Where do we stand legally??? pleaseeeeeeeee

Unofrtunately as there is nothing wrong with the bracelet you have no rights at all,

The fact that they can put links in is great and of course its going to cost money, who did she think pays for the labour for this job as well as the silver that is going to be added. A bigger bracelet with more links to start with would actually have cost more. The assistant should really have pointed this out at the time but as she didnt and that really wasnt good. But its her word against your daughters that she did or didnt say it would cost more.

Could you buy the credit note from her and maybe buy something that you need or buy an early birthday present for someone or your daughters.

Legally, you have no rights at all I'm afraid.

Just curious, what shop was it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • It is a small Welsh company, they only have 2 shops.. I know the owner as I have bought stuff from her before.

This is exactly what I will do if there is no way of her getting her money back, I will pay her for the credit note.

    Thank you ever so much.
I wasnt sure whether it would come under "not fit for purpose" because it doesnt fit.. and that she was told to take it back without informing her how much extra it would be.

I was expecting to pay something up to £10 for 2 links (The truth is, the cheapest option was to add a chain, and this is what would have cost £20.. to add links would have cost a lot more.), but to pay £20 extra for a bracelet that only cost £25, I thought was really steep.

Thanks anyway... Im sure this is a lesson well learnt in her part!!!!

Is there anywhere else you could go to get the links taken out for cheaper.
    Come on you Irons
  • thats a good idea actually, because they were only going to attach a chain to it, so it really wouldnt make all that much difference who or where its done..

Thank you, I shall see if that could an option.

the trouble is, bad news for them, you (as I) wont shop there again, your friends who you talk about them to wont shop there again, your daughters, their friends, maybe their parents will think twice and rightly so.
    Customer service covers generations,
It really would hae been better customer service if they had just refunded and sent away a happy customer who who would have told their friends/family about the great customer service.
Perhaps they (the shop) will leanr from it and stock a few sizes of bracelet in future.

  • exactly... I will certainly not buy from them again, as you say, its such a shame, as it is a small family run buisness that depends on people like myself to keep them in buisness...
Im a hairdresser and I was told when I started working "customers are always right, if they say its Monday, so be it"... I tend to run by that rule, if you can oblige a customer and keep them happy, you do so....

Being that way inclined, I will not be spending my money there again and after my daughters experience today, I know they will not go near the place... its such a shame... As for £25, I would rather see the customer come back again..

Never mind... Thank you for all your help xxx

I don't think its unreasonable for a small shop to stock one standard size, after all they do alterations.
What they need to do, is CHEAP alterations on stuff they have sold, they can hike it up when people bring in stuff bought elsewhere.
    Problem solved.
