MBAM is ineffective in Safe Mode

It has to run in Normal Mode to do its job

    Regards

Not ineffective but reduced effectiveness and certainly better than nothing if normal mode not accessible

rename the mbam.exe file to something else like cleanuppc.exe and try to run it again

    if not then try combofix

    :ComboFix.exe 3MB( From bleepingcomputer.com ) Right- Click , Save As

again you may need to rename combofix.exe to something else to get it to run

if you get either of them to run then post the log file it produces

    oooooo, careful mate.

    Quote from CF setup screen:

"This machine does not have Windows Recovery console installed

Without it, Combofix shall not attempt the fixing of some serious infections"

I'm interested as to how this can be fully effective in Vista / 7 systems

    Maybe I'm missing something

    Vista has recovery built in

    Can you explain that?

As far as I was aware there is the Vista Recovery Environment (RE) on the Vista DVD or Vista recovery disks but not in the OS installation itself.

The Windows Recovery Console required by Combofix is totally different.

    OK

    Step 5

Scan for viruses with a decent updated anti-virus program, if you dont have one then here are some FREE ones:

    * Avast Free Edition - FREE FOR HOME / PERSONAL USE
    * Avira Free Edition - FREE FOR HOME / PERSONAL USE
    * Scan suspicious / unknown files with VirusTotal
    * Use an online anti-virus scanner such as: TrendMicro HouseCall or Bit Defender or Panda etc
    * Scan in Safe Mode for viruses / rootkits with Kaspersky Anti Viral Toolkit Pro (AVP)

Remember only ever install ONE real time AV product as more than one will slow you system down and cause conflicts

    Step 6

Restart your system and see how the performance is doing.

Most if not all of the malware should now be gone

Post your MBAM log and results of any AV scans

    Regards

    Hi Stuart

I got to step 5. I have AVG 8.5 already so i downloaded the latest version 9.0 from their site. It downloaded fine and reached the activation part when the PC locked up. I left it for nearly an hour and nothing, could not click anything. mouse pointer would not move, menu button did nothing, etc. All i could do to restart it was to hold the power key down. Did that and now that it has restarted i have no wireless network connectivitiy at all, AVG 9 has not loaded, AVG 8.5 seems screwed and i cannot try again without the network connectivity.

When i click on the wireless network it cannot find anything and i know of 3 neighbours i normally see with wireless. I have checked the router and it seems fine? Any ideas?

    Hi There

Strange that downloading AVG would do this.

Here is an AVG Removal Tool

Maybe you could try Avast or Avira

Anyway does your wlan adaptor show up in device manager
