savings for grandchildren resident in Europe

I want to open some sort of long-term savings account/fund/bond for my 2 little grandsons who live in Germany. (I don't care much what it is as long as the interest rate is good). It should be under my and my daughter's control but we don't need to be able to access it for the forseeable future. The boys are not eligible for the UK child Trust Fund stuff as they are not UK residents so what is there into which I can make intermittent deposits for their birthday/Christmas presents over the next 10 years or so?
