Help with hanging a lampshade

Hi all,
Hope you can help and that this isn't too silly a question (we're all constantly learning).
When we moved into our flat, there were just bare bulbs in the hall, living room and bedroom. Now, my dad bought a spare shade and fitted that himself in the living room, and I didn't see how he did it. I've just bought 2 lampshades and want to put them up, but am marginally concerned about electrocuting myself  lol.
Can anyone give me simple instructions as to how I hang my lampshades?
TIA
Caroline

first off wait till day light ;-)
ensure light is turned off,
remove light bulb (you do this by pushing it into the the holder slightly and turning leftty loosey)
Unscrew the white collar directly behind where the light buld was (lefty loosey again) (this looks like a white skirt with a black belt behind it (dont loosen the belt) )
lift the lamp shade over the black petty coat upto the belt
refit the white skirt (righty tighty)
put the light bulb back in push into holder and turn slightly righty tighty.
Job done
Turn on light. If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Thanks for the instructions
though you make an error by assuming that it's a bayonet fitting and not a screw-cap
Also I like the righty-tighty and lefty-loosy direction, I told my mum about this recently and she'd never heard it. It got me out of a tight spot recently when I unscrewed the plug in the kitchen sink without thinking through the consequences when I turned on the kitchen tap to rinse the plug out...**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

asssuming you have a normal pendant light fitting as above.
turn off the mains supply first.
remove the bulb, unscrew part C, fix shade on and screw part C back on. refit the bulb.
some cheap shades just have a wire clip/cage which clips onto the bulb. simple.Get some gorm.0 -
Hi Caroline
Your bulbs will be inserted into lampholders at the moment. Turn the switch off to the relevant lampholder and remove the bulb. It will be hot if it has been on a while so let it cool or use a tea towel or something similar.
The lampholder itself will have a top half where the flex enters and a bottom half where the bulb goes into. The bottom half should have a "skirt" on it which will unscrew from the main body of the lampholder.
Once this skirt is off, you can now put the body of the lampholder through the hole in your lampshade and then screw the skirt back on which will hold the lampshade in place.
