When i first had my site created we were with easyspace and bought the domains through them and hosting .I have now changed hosting and had the websites redesigned the hosting package with easyspace was £25 a year we now pay £9.99 when you times this by 15 websites this is quite a saving .When we had the sites redone we were recommended by friends to use these and can highly recommend them myself

do you have hosting with easyspace or just a domain reg?

I just have the domain with them. Presume I can have hosting with them as well. Have let the offer go now. The price is now double that mentioned in original post.

Thank you all for the advice. Sorry have not checked back for replies. Just finished working crazy shifts over New Year. I will look into any recommendations on here.

    Thanks, Ana

yep thats pretty steep. How much work are they going to put in to make sure the site promoted and search engine optimised. I sell websites myself: mine have 5 pages and I sell them for €300 with free hosting and no other bills. Sometimes I feel like I'm selling myself short but thats all descerning people are really willing to pay for something they dont fully understand.

    Then they are not discerning!

Cards on table before I respond. I employ 3 designers full time. I am not looking for business from this post, just sharing my thoughts.

If somebody thinks Mr Site is suitable to 'sell' their business, they probably don't have much of a business IMHO(and yes i know there will be exceptions to that) the same people probably hand out Vista print business cards.

Websites have become a commodity. People see website advertised for £200 and think that is what a website costs. They have no idea what a website does or should constitute. They should get that guidance from a professional web developer. The people charging £200 and less probably don't actually know enough themselves to actually give that advice though. You would probably be better off speaking to Business Link.

In my experience the cheap web 'builders' i won't call them designers, have no idea how to design a site to make it attractive to the visitor nor know how to keep them on the site. So a cheap site that doesn't get you any business - A false economy surely?

Who is going to write it, for the budgets you are talking about there is no way they are going to include content. Do you know what to write so it is attractive to visitors and search engines?

Having got a site, how are people going to find it? Are you expecting web promotion included in the site build? People often assume it does (because the are inexperienced and have simply never bought a website before) but the reality is, it isn't usually included. if you are lucky they will look at page content, tags and so on but they won't be building back links or any other form of off site SEO ( ways to make your site more appealing to search engines like Google)

Like anything else, you are likely to get what you pay for. Essentially in this case you are paying for experience

The question you should be starting with is not price but "What do i want my website to do for me?"

If you only need a 'brochure site' for people to look at to read more about what you do after you have met or contacted them then a basic, functional well designed page is probably sufficient.

Do you want it 'find new customers' - well combined with SEO it could do.

The bottom line is if you don't know what you are doing, don't do it yourself. No matter how well you think you have done it, you will not do it as well as a professional. (and even if friends and family tell you different....)

I usually get 1 or 2 clients a week come to me because they went to a cheap web designer (usually the friend of a friend) and now they can't get hold of him (it's always a 'him'.) The website is outdated, they can't change it and they can't get hold of the guy who built it. I have had one this week that built the site and is charging a quarterly fee for promoting it.Yet it had not brought him a single client. I had a look, it looked amateurish, The onsite SEO was poor and the 'ongoing' work he was being charge for was pointless. He learnt more with me after half an hour on the phone than 12 months with his 'designer'

I appreciate no one has unlimited budget but if you skimp (and buy that i mean pay £200 for a website) then you will probably regret it.The only reason you are considering a website is (in its simplest form) to make money!

Write a brief and send it to 3 local web designers.

You need to tell them what you do, what you want the site to achieve,. Include the number of pages you envisage, whether you need images supplied, tell them if you are supplying written content. Check their hosting costs.
Include links to sites you like, this will give them an idea of how your mind works (they should NOT just copy someone elses site) so they can create a unique design (not a template) for you and your business.

Make sure you see a mock up BEFORE they start building it.

Find out EXACTLY what is included in the price and a go live date.

That is all i can think of for now. Good luck

If MDUK posts his website address here, it'll be advertising and it will have to go. If s/he wants people to be able to find it easily, it could go in the user profile.

Personally -- and this is purely a personal view -- I would not have my hosting with Easyspace ever again. Admittedly my experiences with them and their awful customer service date from 2-3 years ago and things may have improved since, but I've been much better served elsewhere since leaving them.
