I had a Honda civic bought brand new in 2007, lovely car to drive, I loved the digital dash which told you exactly how many miles per hr you were doing, very good boot space.
I also like how the rear seat squabs lifted vertical so you had a through loading flat floor behind the front seats. I never seemed to have a problem seeing out of the back and I would recommend them to anyone.

    Skoda Octavia VRS

Golf with a boot and and more kit
  • just bear in mind that vws recent reliability has suffered, especially on the new golf.
if it were me i would go for the civic every time.
as for lack of visability and no rear wiper, you can use the wing mirrors they do the same job.

Being on the van most of the times , i only get 2 big double decker wing mirrors-- and sometimes when i drive my wife,s car, i amazed of the great view you get from inside mirror.

think my honda bike , in rain and hell for 8 years, went today , ignition and not a single cough! god bless! if only honda did vans;)

i prefer the view from my transits wing mirrors than any car ive ever driven even using the rear view mirror.

    +1 :D

I recently looked around for a new car, first looked at a used Honda Accord which I was pleasantly surprised with, but got put off by what seemed like a number of common problems with the diesel. Then looked at the new Civic - for me, as soon as I sat in it, it seemed to feel very small and cramped - not much head room and I'm not particularly tall! Almost felt claustraphoic which was disappointing.

Then went on to look at the Golf, but overpriced IMO for what you get. So ended up with an Octavia vRS which knocked my socks off and gave me a perma-grin after the test drive :D

both have a cracked front bumber and no idea why

Nothing wrong with my bumbers or my front bumper either, I have had mine from new and it is on 52 plate, most reliable car I have ever had and over the years I have owned many makes.

As an extended family, we have owned three VWs and three Hondas. Owned all of them from new. VWs are built like tanks, but our experiences are that the electrics let them down big time (three electric window motors whilst still under warranty!) plus other electrical issues. By comparison, the Honda's bodies are "tinny", but they have never let us down mechanically, and the engines run as sweet as a nut. Wouldn't buy VW again, but would definitely buy Honda again even though I don't like the design of current models as much as the older ones. Reliability is more important to me than looks.

mine is a sprinter - previously owned by london busses emergency unit(its got the emergency red lights too ;)

the mirrors are really double decker, normal one plus a smaller one on top.. great stuff true

If you want mid size car reliability then Kia Ceed (or ProCeed) and Hyundai i30 are the cars to go for. Maybe a Toyota Auris too.

I have a Kia Ceed and it seems to be pretty good but my previous Skoda Octavia was better bolted together. (Less squeaks)

Also the electronic power steering on the Kia Ceed takes ages to get used to. It is best described as artificial and numb.

Mind you 7 years warranty is pretty useful.

I have only ever been in 3 Golfs and i was very underwhelmed by them.
