Cheapest Way to book Tranzcoastal/Tranzalpine trains in New Zealand

Looking to book these for a trip in the new year. Does anyone have experience of what the best way of booking the trains are? I have a direct link to the train operator so maybe thats the cheapest way? I also have a Nationwide credit card currently on its way to me so I don't need to worry about foreign transaction fees

Why are you catching the train when you could have a very scenic drive and stop where you want.

Did you Know: It costs more than £325,000 a day to run the lifeboat service? (with no government funding) Please donate to the RNLI

I booked the Transalpine train direct with the train company. I remember it to be very busy so you must prebook.
