icy pavements in Aberdeen
Options
for a few days now the local papers and radio have been reporting about the atrocious state of the pavements in aberdeen. there have been apparently over 100 people taken to a/e by ambulance.
pensioners and disabled have been trapped in their homes due to the ice.
anyway my daughter has slipped on the ice this morning, on her way to work, has injured her right elbow, head (banged against the ice) and her lower back and leg. thankfully no breaks but badly bruised, swollen.
due to the total lack of gritting whats our best way to complain, do we write, phone? we are not after compensation, though she has lost at least days pay, and her clothes are ruined. I just want it acknowledged and for the council to GRIT the pavements to stop it happening to someone else.

I am in Aberdeen and totally agree although there was a mini tractor that was gritting the pavement so I think they are taking action but too late, suprise suprise.
I would write if I was you, the address is
Aberdeen City Council (please also specify service)
Ground Floor
St. Nicholas House
Broad Street
Aberdeen AB10 1AR
and make send it to the roads and pavements section.
Good luck, let us know how you get on and hope your daughter is okay,0 -
Hope your daughter is OK. I would phone and they will send you out a complaint form. I did this in Elgin when I fell a few years ago. Was in Aberdeen today and I agree the pavements and car parks in Aberdeen are the worst I have ever seen.0

I think it's just as bad in Lanarkshire atm. Snow/ice/rain/ice/sleet/moreice
I'm a postie and the walking is treacherous to say the least, but as stated in other posts, I would recommend anyone to get some snow chains for their shoes. They do work.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
We are the same in East Kilbride - Pavements are awful - my mum has not been over the door in 2 weeks it is so bad! Funny thing is the council gritted the path at the Heritage Loch ( beautyspot/ walkiing area) but left all the other footpaths!!No Longer addicted to Boots! - Well not today anyway!! :blushing:
Officially Mortgage free 31/07/2017 , 12 years early :j0 -
my daughter went onto the aberdeen council website and there is a winter problems form to fill in. she has done this, wanted to know where accident happened, ?why. she got a reference number but will also write. will be interesting to see if there is any grit on the road when she goes back to work tomorrow. I doubt it myself. thanks for the help everyone:T0

Just as bad in other areas too - I work in a Council office and the street and road leading up to / past it is terrible.
Can't say which, obviously.
I think the councils have been hit hard and have a severe shortage of grit though.0 -

I was at the cinema at the beach on Monday and the car park was horrendous. I think that's a private car park and not covered by the council though, but nothing had been done to attempt to keep it clear.
It's not only Aberdeen council - i'm in Aberdeenshire and there's been practically no grit on our pavements.
Have you read the nonsense now that Aberdeen council aren't salting/gritting the roads and pavements if it gets below -3C as it's ineffective?0 -

I wondered how the poor postie's were getting on.0 -
Very badly until i got my snow chains lol. They have much improved things for me as i've been waiting for new boots arriving for over a month. Boots with no tread don't work too good on snow/ice4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

No shortage of grit where I am- they are still giving it out to residents for free.
Put simply they put their resources into traffic accidents which are more likely to be serious and the pavements only get occasional treatments. The council are likely to be sympathetic but will tell you they have no money and have to prioritise and pavements generally are lower priority with side streets even lower.
Of course it is not helped by litigation culture which can make you and me liable if we clear a pavement! In certain parts of Germany conversely it is required for residents to clear the street/pavements outside their house in snow!0
