Typical Maintanance Costs

Hi,

I am trying to calculate whether it is worthwhile for me to purchase a second car to save the daily ferry journey on my daily commute to work - a saving of £5 per day. But I'm not too knowledgable about typical maintanance costs of a car in a year. I am looking at a small 10 year old Peugeot 106/306 or Citroen Saxo/ZX. What can I roughly expect to pay in a year on wear and tear - replacement parts, etc. I will be travelling 100 miles a week in it. Or does anyone have any suggestions as to the most suitable model of car for the job?

Does anyone foresee any problems in running two cars - one on the island I live on, and one on the other island I work on, or does anyone do similar?

Also does anyone know a way of calculating the depreciation on a used car per year. In my case I would like to know the depreciation on my 2000 Pug 306 HDi per year based on 22,000 miles a year (currently has 55,000 on the clock). What Car do it for New cars but not used cars.

Thanks.

  • the older the car, generally the more it can break. this is not true in all cases though. ive got a k reg toyota carina with 160,000 miles and its bullet proof. it never fails and passes its MOT with flying colours. i wouldnt think you would save, as you would need insurance, tax and MOT. plus you would need to find somewhere to park it.
