Using Washing Machine for 1st Time (without washing in)

Just plumbed in our new washing machine. According to the instruction manual we need to do a wash cycle without clothes in to clean the appliance I guess. Anyhow, instructions say to "turn on the tap, fill the appliance with approx. 1 litre of water and then pour in 1/2 measuring cup of detergent, select proframme and select Start". Question is related to the first part - fill the appliance with 1 litre of water. We have it connected to a valve/pipe under the sink which has its on and off position. I have currently turned it to the on position so water has filled the washing machine pipes. Should I just leave it like this or once the machine has started going turn the water off? How would I know how much 1 litre of water is?

I cannot see why you would need to put a Litre of water before you start but to comply with the instructions I would measure out the amount in a jug or empty milk container and put it through the machine door.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Ah that makes more sense. I had originally read the instructions as put a litre of water into the machine and then turn the tap off!! I guess they are just trying to make sure that there is water in the drum before it starts spinning for the first time. Thanks for the reply. I'll now start the first wash!!0
