This means that the vehcile has been written off by an insurance company and the engineer has deemed the vehicle a catagory C-D. The vehicle is currently unroadworthly. You must have the vehicle repaired and it will need to pass a VIC test and get a new MOT if you want to use the vehicle on the road, tax and insure it. You will need to declare to your future insurer that the vehicle has been subject of a write off.
There are five categories controlled by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) which describe a total loss vehicle (A, B, C, D and T)
A SCRAP only.
B BREAK for spares only if economically viable
C REPAIRABLE but repair costs exceed the Pre-Accident Value (PAV) of the vehicle.
D ALL OTHER REPAIRABLE VEHICLES - Repair costs do not exceed PAV (constructive total losses). 0 -
CAT D does not require a vic check.
Only cat C's and even some of these don't have a VIC marker on them. Google VIC test, get the number from there and ring them with the registration of the car in question. They will tell you if there is a marker on the car which means (if its a cat c) after any repairs are done they will want you to take the car to one of the VOSA stations for a vehicle identity check. This doesn t check the quality of the repairs, just the cars identity. Last one I done 2 months ago was £41. You then get a certificate following the test which will generate a V5 logbook0 -
the value of the car is worth about 50% of its normal value0
