Community Care Grants

After a bit of advice for a friend of mine as im not sure myself!

Brief background history.
After a breakdown with the relationship between himself and his father, his father kicked him out of his house. For 7 weeks he has slept on a friends sofa until it started causing problems for his friend and his partner. he is now living in a homeless night shelter but has been offered a room to rent in someones house, with use of all utilities etc. The room is unfurnished.

He has been advised by the homeless night shelter to apply for a community care grant, at the back of the form it asks for a detailed list of things that are needed, how much they cost and who they are required by etc.
Only thing is he is not sure what sort of things he should be putting on there as he doesnt know what a community care grant covers.

I would have thought that a crisis loan would have been more appropriate for bed, bedding and such like. He hasnt been claiming benefit for 26 weeks so is therefore unable to apply for a budgeting loan.

Does anyone have any advice that i can pass on?

I think he'd probably be entitled from what you have said under this criteria

Direction 4(a)(v): to help people set up home in the community as part of a planned resettlement programme following a period without a settled way of life.[28]

As for what to apply for, put down everything he will the worst they can say is no. Bed, bedding, fridge, kettle whatever he needs. Include an amount for clothing etc aswell as they can usually help with that.

Then try freecycle see if what he needs is going free :)
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • A community care grant doesn't have to be paid back, a crisis loan does.
He needs something to sleep on, to sit on, to keep his clothes in, to eat off and household linen, as a bare minimum. Could he speak to a social worker with the homeless unit and ask for their guidance?

itemise everything, including plates, cutlery, bedding, towels etc. use the argos catalogue for prices, copy the blank item list and use this to put all items on.
