Catalogue company reducing limits

Why do catalogue companies keep increasing your limit, then when you order something suddenly take it away? I have been with JD Williams for about 8 months. My limit was £900 and my balance was £167. I ordered a dryer for £297 and when I checked the status of my order online it said I am over my limit and can't order anything else unless I pay £202 (can't even find out where the extra £35 came from)! They shouldn't give customers limits they don't intend to honour.
Now, I don't mind if they don't want to give me the item as they are not the only place selling it. What I mind is the fact that I only found out because I was checking and they boldly said I was over my limit. Why can't they just do me the courtesy of saying sorry we can't give it to you, and give me a proper explanation of why, and not make it seem that I am trying to get more than I am allowed. Especially since I know that if I missed a payment they wouldn't hesitate to contact me.
Does this overlimit get reported to the credit reference agences?
Sorry for the rant, I slept on it and I am still mad this morning.

good question, same happened to me with choice.
signed up for my sister in march 2009.
got starting limit of £750.
ordered £240 worth of stuff on buy now pay later, pay by jan 2010.
In the summer I think around july I decided I wanted to order about £600 worth of new things so decided to pay off the £240 order early so I had available credit, the new things would have been on the 52week interest free.
They then had serious problems taking my payments and removing the interest, basically when the buy now pay later stuff was on my account it had the interest as part of the balance even tho if pay by jan 2010 there is no interest, the staff on the phone had no automated tools to handle this and were using calculators to take my interest off.
This took nearly 2 months to sort out.
By the time it was sorted my credit limit had been reduced to £175, no explanation was given even when I contacted the complaints department was told nothing wrong other than I owed them £3 delivery costs for the £240 order. I showed them their advert stating there was NOTHING to pay until jan 2010 and they admitted was wrong but said they couldnt increase my credit limit again, so I closed the account and told them if anything appears on my credit report I will take legal action.0 -
I have just been on the phone with JD Williams. They said that because I have an arrangement with Shoe Tailor, they have withdrawn my credit. It's because all the companies are connected. I asked them why it took them 8 months to find out. All he kept saying is that the order was referred. I guess they only refer the big stuff. Hopefully, this may help explain things for others who have had their credit withdrawn or reduced.0

at least they gave you a reason which is something.
It seems credit limits with catalogues are only provisional. They must do a second check when an order is placed.0 -
i have had a jd williams account now for 14 - 15 months i guess, starting limit was only £125 as with just about everyone else, it is now as of this months statement £1500 i have never had any issues with them what so ever, infact i would say they are alot better then others (my opinion).
But the comment of relationships with other parts of there organisation causing them to lower limits worrys me a little, as i have a jacamo account which has a 400 limit and i have had that for 5 months now i guess, i hope they dont start lowering my limits because of that .... perhaps its time to close the jacamo account down.
The lowering of your limit may be down to the fact you have had it all this time and not really utilised the limit, so they may be doing what alot of other lenders are doing and lowering the limits to lower the risk of none payment etc, iam not saying that is what you would do but alot of companies (mainly credit card complanies) have been lowering limits constantly.
Next are another example of this kind of thing there limits charge every month, so one month you may have a 2k limit and the next month it might be £250.00.:j:beer: :j0 -
did you have an arrangement to pay with Shoe Tailor?0

Weirdly enough this happened to me today.
I placed an order on Monday with my catalogue (part of the JD group) and received an email this morning saying it couldn't be processsed as it would take me over my credit limit. Logged onto my account and my limit is still £900- order was far less than this and balance on my account is only £60. Sent an email to them but they're closed now over New Year... never had a problem with them before0 -
I know my Next account fluctuates with credit rating on a month to month basis. I had a massive toe to toe with Northern Rock who made some pretty huge errors with my mortgage account, ending up with my Credit rating being in the toilet. During this 6 month period (I ended up having to take them to court) my limit with Next went down to my outstanding balance. But now that NR have remedied their error, its shot back up again.
Perhaps the catalogues are the same?Earn £10 a day JAN: £92.23 / £310 :j ...............NSD Jan 2/10
14 months to debt free with snowballing (start date Jan 2012) £0/12600........JAN weight loss target 5/60 pounds
I'll make it to the moon if I have to crawl0 -
With the JD Williams Group if you have an account in arrears they will cancel your orders on any other accounts you may have with them until your payments are up to date
Or if your on a LTPP (Long Term Payment Plan) on the one account they will remove the credit limits from any other accounts you may have.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0
