Help Windows Update & Vista

Can anyone offer any advice, in plain english lol

Both DH and I have vista him on a laptop me on a PC. Since early November windows update wont update nor will windows defender.
I got around the defender problem by downloading definitions directly from the defender web site but it is still showing an error as it cant do it itself.

When trying to update windows it says.......
"windows could not search for new updates"
"an error occured while checking for new updates for your computer"
"error (s) found Code 80072EFE" "windows update encountered an unkown error"

Because we have vista it wont let us onto the update website to try and download manually, it says we should use the inbuilt updater, but it wont work grrrrr.

I cant find anything online or on the microsoft web site that works. I've tried disabling firewall, anti virus, still wont work. Also found a similar issue historical with XP with work arounds from microsoft, but they dont work with vista.

Anyone had or know how to sort this issue? Worried we're missing important updates. I hate vista.

Thanks, I just tied this and it wouldnt work, it looks like its for Windows 7 not vista funny found lots of things like this, only for XP or windows 7 and non for vista!

There is some info for Vista here which is worth trying to start with.

Make sure that the time and date is correct. It does have an effect on Windows Update if its out.
