Stripping paint off beams

What is the best way to get a thin layer of paint off ceiling beams?
Sandblasting is not an option on account of the mess.
I've used a blow torch before for varnished beams but only in an empty cottage.
I was wondering about a heat gun or one of those products where you coat the beam and cover with clingfilm.
Any recommendations?

a heat gun is the best method by far. esp indoors in a habited house.
im not keen on any chemical methods. (esp indoors).

I'd also go with a heatgun and plenty of ventilation. I've used chemical paint strippers, Nitromors in particualry, and although they are effective, they are also nasty to work with.

Thanks, I think someone has one I can borrow to see if it works. They come in different power ratings I believe?
  • I would say it depends on the smoothness of the wood and how old the paint on the beam is? Remember older paints can contain Lead, so a 'wet' removal system would be preferable if this is the case.
  • Whatever you do don't use steel wool as it stains certain woods (like oak)
