changing greenhouse from glass to perspex?

hi all,

I am looking to change my greenhouse from glass to perspex and need 50 530mm by 530mm sheets to do this.

I am having to do this to meet the regs for fostering and with other thing that need to be done - it needs it as cheap as possible.

Any ideas on a cheap website that can offer this, or cheaper alternatives to perspex?

I have seen a new greenhouse in b and q for £170, but would rather use what I hvae then replace, if possible.

Thanks for looking, Simone

  • Try https://www.nickgraybuildingplastic.com/ , lots of people who keep koi carp use him and rate his service highly.
You need the 4mm twin wall polycarbonate sheeting.
  • these have quite good prices.
could you not just safety film it?

  • A great place to buy Perspex is theplasticshop.co.uk - I'm sure if you send them an email with all your sizes - they'll give you the cheapest way of cutting. Plus they offer a price promise so you can be confident that you'll get the best prices!
    Good luck!

I almost can't believe what I'm reading here. You want to offer a loving home to a child and some bureaucrat is telling you that you can't have a glass greenhouse in your garden because of the Health and Safety risk?? I'm speechless. Am I living in a different world to everybody else? I thought children facing normal risks were an everyday part of them growing up? You're saving the Local Authority money by offering a child a home and you're expected to pay out for a new greenhouse out of your own pocket.:confused: No parent with a child of their own who had a greenhouse in their garden would be obliged by the authorities to replace the glass with plastic.

I know it seems strange, but its one of the things that were highlighted at the beginning of our course - your house isnt treated as a normal home, more like a childminders house would be.

So we have to get a locked cupboard for all cleaning products, locked cupboard for sharps and medicines, updated electric fuse box thingy and so the greenhouse is only a small part of it.

We could put a fence up around it , but only 3 sides - and so the plastic is the best option - seems a bit OTT sometimes, but its better safe than sorry!

I bought from Greenhouse warehouse in the end - easy website and no extra delivery for our rural location!

Thanks for all your help. Simone

What about toughened saftey glass? That's actually mandatory under building regulations for attached greenhouses. Surely the idiots couldn't object to that?

Things happen to kids, make big news, people get sacked, other social workers/councils become more paranoid, people call for more rules, more checks, call for social workers to do their job properly, to check on vulnerable kids more often.
    Is it any wonder?

btw simone, I hope you have alot of joy from fostering and well done you! :)

  • Try casupply.co.uk they do cheap multi packs of 4mm polycarbonate and can cut to size if required
    cheers
  • You could try rhnuttall.co.uk Their website looks pretty good and helpful. I have used them for rubber washers, but I think they do all types of plastic sheeting too.:T Happy hunting!!
