I have a pre-payment meter installed which Ive ben perfectly happy with. However this morning I received a letter from SO saying that I was £746 in debt with them. Now this is crazy- I just dont s3ee nhow it could happen when i use the key to top up each week. Where do SP get this from? What do I do?

Check the current reading on your meter with what it says on the bill and with 'actual' readings on previous bills to see if they run consistently and evenly. This should give you an idea of whether they are right of not. Then you can ring this crappy company with its premium access number and slow response times and argue it out with them. But how can you owe money with a pre-payment meter?."Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."0

Scottish Power have just massively put their prices up in Scotland - second most expensive. Scottish Gas are first.0

Thats the thiiing- Ive never actually received a bill- just the letter. Looked on my meter and it says there is no debt being collected- blasted people sending me letters on a Sat when their offices are closed. I have sent them an email querying it0 -
Sadly, it's very easy to be in debt on a prepayment meter. If the meter hasn't been changed to reflect new (higher) prices, then when you pay £10 for 1000 units of electricity, SP (or anyone else) will be expecting £12 in payment. The meter doesn't know this and nor do you and SP will only tell you when they send you a bill. Unfortunately, in the past, SP haven't been sending any bills to prepayment customers so the debts build up.
They are real debts but all SP can do is change your meter's debt recovery rate up to a maximum of £10 per week.0 -

Surely the suppliers should have responsibility for ensuring their meters are set correctly. Wouldnt this be gone through the key anyway? I know the gas card can make changes to the tarriff on that one0 -
I thought the keys updated the tariff as well.0
