Just been updating the PC trying to fix the Avast problem I had earlier.I updated Java fine, then noticed that there was a Windows update ready for installation, this was Service Pack 1 for Vista, according to Windows Update.Just installed it, but the PC had spent over 2hr on the startup screen with the green bar scrolling across the screen and the Microsoft Corporation logo below it.Thought this couldn't be right so I turned off the machine and restarted.tried to boot into safe mode, nothing, put in the Vista disk and tried to repair- nothing.Cannot system restore as it claims there is no restore point despite one being made before I updated.I have over 300GB of data on the HDD that I have no backup for. There is approx 90GB of free space on the HDDAny suggestions?

Don't know if it helps but theree is no activity with the HDD whilst the PC is trying to startup.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Christ almighty, I can't believe you've never installed SP1. One of the main things it does is fix the file copying and speeds up the system no end.
Its not going to be easy to fix and guarantee no loss of data. Best thing you can do is to get an external USB hard drive, get hold of an Ubuntu CD, boot from the CD and run it as a Live CD then copy everything from the hard drive to the external one. Then go from there....0
