air miles from credit card shopping?

Hi folks, I will over a period be gong back and fourth between Th UK and barbados where i have bought a small house I intend to retire in in 5-6 years.

However, I wanted to ask what the best way is to rack up a lot of airmiles with British Airways or Virgin atlantic via credit card shopping? any suggestions are welcome!

The best card is the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card. The fee is £120 per year and you get 1.5 miles for evey pound spent and 3 miles per pound spent with British Airways.

There are other BA AMEX cards with a lower anual fee but you don't get as many miles per pound.

  • Wasn't the conclusion of the "reward" cards article a couple months back that airmiles cards generally offer poor value. You'd be better off getting one of the top paying cashback cards and putting the cashback towards your flights. This also allows you to fly with the cheaper airline rather than being locked in.
  • You can transfer your TESCO Clubcard points into AirMiles at the rate of 60 Miles for every £2.50 in club card vouchers you are entitled to.

When in Barbados hire your car from AVIS you earn 10 Miles for every full hire day.

If you go for the BA Amex option....Also get a Amex card of some other kind, eg blue card....then the annual fee will drop to around £30 roughly as they view you as a joint card holder. The Amex card is great by the way and you may view the mileage acquired monthly on the BA site - Executive Club.

Also, bear in mind the 2nd card you get may or may not also carry an annual fee but may be avoided with a minimum annual spend of some kind. :)
