Hi albatross,
I have two desktop computers in separate rooms (mine and my brothers.) I am trying to get internet access on the second computer which has got the wireless adaptor plugged into it. The main PC (mine) is connected to the router with a wired connection so yes PC1 is wired and PC2 wireless. How can i get dhcp changed to yes?
Yes google, everything really, works in IE on PC1 but it won't find it on PC2. I get a connection but can't access the internet at all. Thanks.

then ok everything
then try a release and renew

and that the lan settings have nothing tickedEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
OK ... Im getting confused but here goes.
PC2 (the wireless one). Have you run the netgear CD that came with the USB adapter??. The netgear utility should be installed is it?? use this to configure the connection.
Here is a link to the latest drivers and how to install them and get it running.

Hi albatross, I enabled dchp and got internet instantly!! Brilliant except as soon as it connected I got a bubble up saying that the computer is infected!! Argh.
The balloon reads "Windows has detected spyware infection. It is recommended that you use special anti-spyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware!"
The computer has now started some spyware scanning thing called pest trap control panel?? Its scanned the computer and found 77 severe threats and is asking me to activate something (in other words purchase) in order to get rid of them.
What should I do about this?? I was going to download AVG free onto the computer like I have on my computer - will this help?
Yes scooter I ran the netgear disc before I plugged the usb adaptor in so I should have all that software ok.

DO NOT CLICK the warning or activate anything. You have a spyware infection.
Follow the Spyware Removal Guide here ---> http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269.0 -
You didn't click on it did you?
Follow chippy's link..
You need to get some antispyware software (microsoft defender, lavasoft ad-aware), and some AV software on there asap (AVG or avast)
and also try https://www.ccleaner.com to have a quick cleanup before you start.
and run a windows update https://www.windowsupdate.com (assuming that your XP software is legit?)
Avoid clicking on these adverts about spyware, they often infect you rather than cleanup. You need to stick to legit cleaners as mentioned in the spyware sticky thread
Not sure if your wireless is fully secure at the moment, but we will come back to that when you have cleaned up the malware..
You may want to install the good antispyware stuff on the other PC as well.. stick to stuff mentioned in the malware thread.
This microsoft link will give both PC's the once over..

Hi Chippy and Albatross,
Thanks so much for your help. No I didn't click on it, I thought it was suspect. I just deleted it and have followed the steps in the thread you posted Chippy. The computer's in safe mode now and I'm in the process of running all the scans. God what a mess! I think my brother's computer has been collecting viruses for a while - the macafee anti-virus was several months out of date so he has had no protection for some while. Also he told me that he's had viruses that he's just not been able to get rid of and a premium rate number even connected to his dial up without his permission. We phoned up and got premium rate numbers banned due to this. So basically I think the computer's a mess and its only now that I've come to install this adaptor its all come to a head. I've already got AVG anti-virus and ad-aware and zonealarm and spybot on my own computer so I think I'm ok as regards viruses. If I'd known before I wouldn't have allowed him to sit with no protection like that!! Anyway, it'll take a while for these scans so I'll post again when its done as yeah albatross I'll still need to get the security for the network set back up. Thanks again.

The Ewido scan has just finished. It found 34 problems 4 of which were marked high, they were GB dialers and one was called Downloader.Small.cpg and when I clicked apply all actions it came up with this blurb:
"The file C:\Documents and Settings\Allan Leonard\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\P48ZLH8P\n[1].cab/n.exe cannot be quarantined because its embedded in the archive C:\Documents and Settings\Allan Leonard\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\P48ZLH8P\n[1].cab. Do you want to quarantine the whole archive?"
Should I quarantine this archive - is it important? Thanks again.:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -
answer yes..
Or, if you run https://www.ccleaner.com (when you install it untick the yahoo toolbar install option), it should delete all you IE temp files, including
C:\Documents and Settings\Allan Leonard\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\P48ZLH8P\n[1].cab
problem gone..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I've already installed and ran the ccleaner - I must've missed the bit where it said it was going to install the yahoo toolbar as it's installed it. Should I uninstall and do it again? Thanks:hello: :hello: :hello:0
