Renting to council

Can any one advise about renting our home to the council. I live in Surrey if that helps and our mortgage company have already agreed to an inital 1 year of us renting and then to reevaluate?

I am keen to hear pros and cons, what prep we have to do in terms of gas/elec etc..

Ideally I want absolutely nothing to do with the house ever again until we want to sell

We lease a house to the Notting Hill Housing Trust. We've agreed a 5-year lease and receive the rent directly from them each month. Before they would take house they did an inspection and gave us a list of work to be done, e.g. Gas, energy and electric certificates, fire door on the kitchen, fire extinguisher, wired-in smoke alarms, glass doors to be covered with special film, window restrictors fitted. When we notified them that the work was complete they inspected again and then gave us a contract to sign.

We also have to have a British Gas 3-star maintenance agreement and are responsible for the white goods for the first 12 months.

No voids, no agency fees, no stress. I highly recommend it!

look out for clauses about whether the council are responsible for returning the property in the same condition as it was when they signed the lease.......

some lenders are not keen on council lets to homeless or asylum seekers.... check it out.

Sell now. Unless you have neighbour issues, in which case I can see your point.

  • I looked into renting out my flat to the council or to a housing association but all of the schemes were closed when I enquired about three months ago. Instead I have rented it through Northwood estate agents who have taken the flat on for 12 months under their fully managed and rental guaranteed scheme. Give them a try if there is an office near to you and you have not had any joy with the council or housing associations.
