boiler controls query

Options
hi, I have an old boiler, which still works perfectly well, so I'm not considering replacing it (its a stelrad ideal sprint rapide) and I also have british gas service cover.
Just have a query about the control thingy which switches it on and off (has 2 on and 2 off buttons and spins round over 24 hours) is it possible to change this or upgrade it at all without affecting the boiler??

Is the control unit (programmer) separate to the boiler?

If it's wall mounted - and looks vaguely like this - and ticks remorselessly ? :-

........ yes, it's replaceable with an electronic one.

BUT - get an electrician who knows what he's doing and actually notes the existing connections, as they're not as straightforward as they appear. Mine didn't note how the old was connected ... and has finished with the pump permanently on run. Got a new electrician in ..... and he was no better. Eventually I've had to sort it myself ..... much easier if the boiler / stat / pump connections had been noted when disconnected.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

yes, it is separate to the boiler, it is fitted just above it.
it isnt exactly the same one as in the link, but it is the same kind of thing, a 24hour marked wheel that goes around
