Help please: probs with recent BB upgrade to 512k

I was offered a upgrade to 512k BB from 150K from Tiscali last week when I phoned to give notice of cancellation. I was told it would be effective within 24 to 48 hrs. I've noticed no difference in my speed being updated? I've beeing doing speed tests several times on a daily basis, by different test sites. All of them show I'm still on my lower speed, sometimes as low as 60kbps. Yesterday I phone up to find out if my 512 was active, and was told it has been since the time of my phonecall of the upgrade. I was told to phone the technical helpline.
>:(Well i phone the helpline, and NOTHING became of it, apart from me expecting a slightly larger phone bill(0870). >:(I spent ages, about half an hour, to be told to do tests, which resulted in nothing. >:( Then the woman made me turn off my pc and said she was going to do some tests. Before she did her tests she made me hold 2wice for about 5 mins each time. >:( Then she apparently done the tests and still no result. She told me she would email me some other steps to try, that should rectify the problem. I should expect the email within 20 minutes. It has been 24hrs and I've still had nothing through!!! I am fuming rite now.

Can someone tell me if it may be something to do with my computer...settings or someting?? Or anything I should do to be able to have my 512k?

This is appalling service, and a help line that can't help. I've been with Tiscali for 11+ months and haven't had problems before, they made me this offer to stay with them, but I've not yet experienced the "upgrade", I'm seriously considering cancelling by the end of the day if noting is resloved.

I assume you have an external modem in which case when you turn off the computer you also need to turn off the power to the modem & disconect it from the tiscali / phone line  ;D

Leave everything turned off for a few minutes, turn the PC back on followed by reconnecting the modem to tiscali / phoneline and finally powering up the modem.

Thank you both,  Tony H & Chippy Minton, I've done what you suggested yesterday, and I'm still on slow. I've also been using the speed check at adslguide, and I've read through slow connection checklist(this is what I beleive I should have been emailed yesterday, but never got it)
Could the fact that I'm using a telephone extension lead, cause this? I've used it for the 150k with no problems, but perhaps more to transmit?? ??? My brother uses an extension for his 512 with no probs, but I shall try that and see it it makes the difference. :-/

Well I've just moved the pc next to main phone box, and plugged the modem straight out of the filter coming out of that. Still no difference, so it would seem having the extension doesn't matter.
this was my latest speed test result:
    Downstream 137 Kbps (17.1 KB/sec) 147 Kbps (inc. overheads)
    Upstream 252 Kbps (31.5 KB/sec) 272 Kbps (inc. overheads)
  • Looking at your stats you don't seem to be on 512k, just run mine from Metronet and they are much faster.
    Downstream 461 Kbps (57.6 KB/sec) 497 Kbps (inc. overheads)
    Upstream 248 Kbps (31.0 KB/sec) 267 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Looks like you are still on 150.
Suggest you ditch them. Ask for a MAC number and migrate. Check out alternatives on ADSL guide. Metronet are very good but others might suit you.
    Peter.

PS I'm at the end of a long BT line and do use an extension lead of about 20m.

It would appear I'm still on 150k, but they've started charging me for 512k since the 7th. I am very peeved with this and I'm seriously considering ditching them very soon, only thing is they don't support migration, so I'll have to cancel and wait for them to "leave" my line, then I'll have to sign up from new again. But based on the experience I've had in the past few days(phone calls to national rate #, nothing resolved >:() I'd be happy to go to another provider.
