Broadband - additional computers

Hi,

I am considering getting myself a laptop. The thing I was wondering about is the internet connection. We have broadband at home downstairs and I was wondering whether I woudl be able to connect to the same internet account upstairs? We are currently with Wanadoo - now orange. Or any suggestions to go about it - cheaply!

Any responses appreciated

Yeh, by far and away, the best option is to go wireless.

If you're not sure how to do it get someone in to sort it out.

All you need is a Wireless ADSL router which you can pick up for around £60 retail and cheaper still online, they are relativly easy to setup as they simply replcae your exsisting modem and then split the internet into as many computers/laptops you have/get. all you need is to call/email wandoo and get the details required (lots of numbers and settings like ppoe and stuff which will make no sense to us mere mortals but you just have to type it in the right box :-) )

    hope that helps

Thanks for that guys. So really I would have to get a wireless adaptor and connect it to the main computer thats already got broadband?

What would happen if I decided to get internet through another company - can you do that even if another computer in the house is with another supplier? Also if I did that would the times I was internet come on the phone bill or not?

Sorry Im not very technically minded - and can be very blonde at times!

the main pc can still be connected by cable if need be, it is not essential to use and adapter on that one unless you want to

You can change Broadband suppliers as many times as you like, you just need to change the account log on details on the router.

I'm not sure why another PC would be on another supplier if you are going wireless as they can all share the main broadband account ?? you would need two phone lines ??

are you talking about using dial up internet on the other computer ??

Yeah I was just wondering if I would be able to leave the main computer on broadband - normal not wireless - and have a laptop elsewhere in the house on a different provider?

not sure why you would do that ?

both PC and as many Laptops as you like can just "share" the broadband link, why would the Laptop need to be on another provider ??

I was just looking at the different option really. I am going to contact Orange/Wanadoo and see if they would give us the wireless box thing free instead of 34.99 - we are on broadband, cant go very fast because our phone line only lets us go to 512K - if that makes sense - but are not wireless and currently get charged 17.99 a month - whereas they let people have that package for 14.99 now and 17.99 for broadband wireless and talk!

If you have been a customer for a while and you ask for your MAC code so that you can transfer to another ISP, I believe that they would give you a Livebox to stay with them. They may not just give you one if you ask for one though, they would only do it to keep your custom.

problem with Wanadoo's wireless box is that it ONLY works with their broadband, if you want to change then you would have to buy an new wireless modem

if your speed is limited by the line then other suppliers may be cheaper for broadband at 512 mb, the savings you make will pay for the new modem in the long run (some do it for as little as £9.99 ish a month !) and you are not tied to a particular supplier :)
