Laptop uneconomical repair - returning damaged one?

Options
Hi

I recently claimed accidental damage repair of a laptop I have, and have been told it is un-economical to repair. I have been advised i can purchase another from Comet up to a certain value to replace it.

The thing is, what happens to the damaged one and can I buy it back from the insurers/repairers? It still works and has personal data on that I would like back. The only damage is that the screen is cracked. Can I not 'buy it back' as you can if your car is written off after an accident? I did ring them but got that feeling I was being fed a load of BS as to why they could not return the damaged one.

Also - this accidental damage is supplied by my bank (HSBC). can I ask them to use a different insurer? I'm not keen on being forced to replace the damaged laptop with a model for sale in Comet as their range is fairly limited.

cheers,
