Car insurance comparison sites - different quotes for the same company

Options
I hope this is the right board to post this on........

I have been looking at car insurance on confused.com and compare the market.
For the exactly the same details, I got two different quotes for the same company - confused.com quoted £536.68 with e-car and compare the market quoted £819.13 also with e-car
There is no phone number for e-car so I can't call them to check which is the right amount.
I haven't used these sites before - is it normal for the prices to be so different??

Comments

  • They can be out quite a bit. When I was getting mine this year, go compare was quoting me £400 for a policy, when I tried to go buy it they quoted me £800! They could not tell me why there was such a difference.

Different comparison sites use different assumptions, which can lead to different quotes from the same provider.

I found that go compare's quotes were so far out it was useless.

Just a suggestion, try getting the actual quote from e-car themselves online (they are online based, hence the competitive quotes!).

P.S I personally dont trust these comparison sites for this very reason.

I always go direct for a quote after using price comparison sites as a guide - usually results in cheaper quotes and then there's the likes of Quidco cashback as well which wouldn't be available through comparison websites since they're taking that commission for themselves.

I Agree with kilty. I do all my comparisons in Firefox, find the cheapest quote then use internet explorer through quidco to buy the policy. Doing it this way guarantees you get the cash back. I have earnt over £200 on quidco this year just from purchasing things I would have normally purchased, its free money!
  • Thank you for all your replies, I tried on e-cars own site and it showed the same quote as confused.com, so it seems compare the market was way off.

Compare the market have had quite a few problems with e-car IIRC.
There was a flaw a few years back where if you told them you'd fitted braded brake hoses to your car, the quote came in fixed at £300-something and you could actually click through and buy the policy at that price.
Never did find out what happened with that, whether everyone got their policies canceled or what, but a lot of younger drivers took advantage of it at the time.
