Car damaged by stolen 'Minimoto'

Hi All
On Christmas Day the Police knocked on the door to tell me that my car had been hit by a stolen minimoto. The damage is on the bumper and I've had one quote so far of £500. I rang my insurance, I would have to pay my excess - £250 - and I would lose my NCB. I've done an insurance quote without a NCB and my insurance shoots up by almost £300!! Its just not worth claiming through them I don't think.
Anyway, does anyone have any advice on what I can do?? The Police had caught the git but I've not heard from them since so not sure what's happened and if he's been charged etc. I've tried the Motor Insurers Bureau who tell me that as it wasn't a car that hit my car, they can't do anything. Arrrggghh! What a rubbish Christmas present!

  • You might get lucky there was an article in car mechanics at good few years back when a guy's car roof got wrecked by yobs running over it. The police caught them but typically only gave them a caution, he found out he could take them to the civil court for recovery of losses but the police refused to give the yobs details due to data protection!!

So you could try contacting the police and see what they say, hopefully you'll get their address so you can take it further.

Try and claim from the Motor Insurance Bureau.

have you considered sourcing a bumper yourself?
if you are looking at forking out £500 then you could save a chunk if you can find a second hand bumper
even better if you can find one in your colour!
    what car is it?

i don't think its the price thats getting the op. its the principal that someone can damage your car and get away with possibly only a caution and them being left out of pocket for something that isn't thier fault.

oh i get it but sometimes you need ot bite the bullet and minimise your outlay
  • Some chav damaged my girlfriends car once. We caught him and he was arrested. When it went to court he had to pay for the repairs to the car so its possible the same thing could happen in the op's case. Failing that there is always the small claims court.
  • Hi All
Thanks for the replies - I've tried the MIB - they told me to submit a form which I will do but they don't hold out much hope of me having a successful claim as my car wasn't hit by another car????
I've been in touch with the Police again and am waiting for them to ring me back - hopefully be able to get some advice from them.
I'm going to ring my insurance back and see exactly how much NCB I would lose, and how much my insurance would go up by, its a claim that has been verified by the Police though to not be by fault, so how they can justify putting my insurance up, I don't know!
I have no problem with sourcing a new bumper myself, but getting one in the same colour would probably be tricky, and then I would have to find someone to fit it etc, etc - its not something I could do!!
So have lots to do and sort out, and at the end of the day if I have to pay for it all - hey-ho. Bloody annoying but at least my car still works and I'm still alive - roll on 2010!! Happy New Year!

I have had two cars in 4 years hit by cretins that drove off even though the cars we parked legally one on a very quite street thats one reason I moved house after previous hit n run

The first car I just part exchange costs too much repair and it was old anyway and going to scrape. Moved house a year later and some prat hit car again on 5th Nov, a street that gets around 20 cars a day at most. It was some white vehicle probably a van of some sort

I rang MIB and they told me that I cant claim because the driver may be insured but we dont know, and even if I could I have to pay first £300

So claimed off insurance fully comp. Although I have no claims up to 9 years can only claim for 5 and have NCD protection, I bet my insurance will still go up and or cant shop around for new customer discount as I normally do with cashback too.

Whats point in MIB if you cant claim? it isnt my fault so moron cant drive or do decent thing, they may or may not be insured and we all pay premium to MIB anyway

As I said in other thread which OP posted in arms Car damaged by stolen 'Minimoto' about this I also got car repaired which costs £600 with also curtsey car. At time I had a dint in bumper when I got car so I decided to replace it for a reconditioned bumper and reprayed as a cost of £94 as they were doing a repray at time

Ironically the front wing which got hit I had replaced 3 months before as it was rusty from within at a cost of £250 including repsray from a guy we know who does body jobs
  • i would just pay up and move on
