MORRISONS PETROL STATIONS PAY AT THE PUMPS possible fraud

Hi,
I just wanted to bring this to peeps attention as i felt it was important.

My brother recently found out he had 2 payments taken from his credit card which he did not purchase. When he queried it with the card provider they asked him if he used Morrisons petrol stations pay at the pumps card system, which he had used a few times, they then told him that the systems store your pin and chip number. unbelievable if correct

It would be interesting to hear if others have had a similar experience

I have not yet contacted morrisons about this but i will do.

Please post if anyone has heard the same

I hope they are not storing pin numbers, as I use Morrisons Pay at the Pump twice a week. If they do, I'm gonna change the PIN numbers asap (and stop using the pay at pump machines), but so far, I've had no dodgy transactions.

If they are - they'll be breaking their merchant terms and could be heavily fined by their bank ... so I really doubt it.

  • Morrisons did have a problem some months ago where the self service tills took double payments nationwide on a particular day so I'd just phone them and see if its a similar problem.

I think its unlikely that they are storing them - I know there was some problem with card readers at morrisons being tampered with at certain shops/stations and that a lot of fraud occured due to that and cloned cards etc (probably a year ago or so). Wonder if its a repeat of the same thing?

  • My OH used to have an Asda credit card which he used at ASDA automated pumps to get the extra 2p off and the next time he came to use it at the pumps it authorised fuel upto £70 without asking for his PIN!! So he cancelled the card. We thought that maybe it happened because it was their own bank's card, but I'm a bit worried now as I've used my Tesco card at Morrisons automated pumps recently.

I frequently use my Chip & Signature Card (PIN) free at Tesco's Pay @ The Pump.

The card is verified allowing me to dispense I think (as above) about £70 worth of fuel.

I asked both Tesco and my card issuer what happens if someone nicks my card and uses it at a Pay @ The Pump. Both Tesco and my Card Issuer agree that Tesco would bear the cost of the fraud.

    I wouldn't bother.

If the yarn the credit card supplier gave was true, they should be acting immediately in conjuction with Morrisons & all other card companies to ensure security of all card users at the store(s) involved is not compromised. That would mean a minimum of all cards used being immediately stopped & replaced.

But, like others suggest, I envisage no truth in the yarn as (a) they wouldn't normally explain the method of security breach and (b) they don't seem too keen to bother about it.

There are NO authorised terminals that store chip and PIN I think the OP brother was told a little white lie, there have been issues with UPTs where certain stations have been targeted and devices attached to the machines to record pin numbers, but this is very VERY rare!! Its the same issue as we get with ATMs being targeted by those who want to obtain your PIN number.

There are terminals out there that were modified to record the MAG stripe tracks and PINs of customers who were using the retailers, again this has been covered both here and in the media before.

The only new thing that is starting to emerge is the non-PIN and non-sign methods of paying, this is common in the US where low value transactions are just 'swipe and go' with no validation, and there are some UPTs that will do this with chip and signature cards. The rule as always though is that if it doesn't seem right it it more than likely isn't right and in this case contact your bank (and the police if needed)
