    Hi There

It might just be that Avast doesnt integrate with the Windows Security Center.

Open security center in control panel and see what it says

You are protected but if you cannot live with the cross through the shield then you need to reset the security centre

    1. Go to control panel and open Administrative tools.
    2. Click on services.
    3. Go down to Windows Management Instrumentation.Stop this service.Set to start automatically.
    4. Stop Security Center service too.
    Set to start automatically.
    5. Exit out of this area, to your desktop.
    6. Right click Start, and choose Explore.
    7. Go to c:\windows\system32\wbem\repository.
    Delete this subdirectory ONLY.
    Leave the others there.
    8. Exit back to your desktop and reboot your computer (you might need to boot twice).

This will rebuild the deleted folder, and the database.
Once restarted, Windows Security Center should show the correct info.
Antivirus, and firewall, should now be recognized.

  • Did you uninstall McAfee first?

It definitely does integrate with Windows Security Center/Alerts (I'm looking at it right now) in all flavors of Windows (XP, Vista, and Windows 7). Can you confirm which update you have installed for peace of mind (click on 'About Avast'). It does indeed suggest that McAfee has not been fully removed; two running anti-virus programs (never a good idea) will conflict and Security Center will denote you have no anti-virus installed.

    HTH.
