I understand from some of the posts on this forum that there is a 7 day cooling off period under the DSR if you purchase goods over the internet or by mail order. Does this apply if you bought it directly instore from a retailer?

Well it would if the dsr (distance selling regulations) applied to a 'distance' of 3 feet!
Dsr applies to purchases bought at a distance so why would you expect it to apply when buying from a store?0 -
Many retailers do offer a period in which you can return goods to store (Argos being the most famous example), so have you checked the retailer's policy?0
