Advice please - laptop sufficient for my requirements?

I'd appreciate some advice from computer techie-minded people as I'm admitedly not very techinally-minded.

I am buying for the first time a wireless Laptop for my young teenage son. His requirements are the usual teenage thing - music, movies, photos and least importantly (to him - ahem) homework!

The Laptop I'm considering buying has:

Processor: Intel Celeron
Hard Driver: 250GB
RAM: 2GB
Wireless networking: 902.11 b/g
Has Windows 7

Is this sufficient?

I'm really greatful for any replies - I'm so useless at techie-know-how that I've had to submit this post twice (as I couldn't find my first post). So apologies if the first one appears as well, eventually.

Many thanks in advance

Yes it is sufficient. I sell refurbs and 3-4 year old ones which are lower spec are more than adequate for email, web browsing, playing movies, facebook, homework etc. My mum is still doing all the above on a seven year old desktop with an old AMD processor, 512MB RAM and a 40GB hard drive.

The most lowest spec laptop or desktop computer it is possible to buy is more than capable of doing all you need it to.

Are you not forgetting about the most essential requirement for a teenager? = gaming!

£ for £ you will get a better spec with a desktop PC.

I would suggest you consider a PC with media centre and TV card.

Doesn't tell us much, not enough detail. Plus you've not stated a budget.

If £300, there is this Acer Aspire 5542 for £295. It's a £400 laptop. An Argos return.

AMD ATHLON DUAL CORE M300 processor.
    2.0GHz processor speed.

    4GB DDR2 RAM.

    15.6in screen size.
    1366 x 768 resolution.
    250GB hard drive capacity.

    Multi format dual layer.
    ATI RADEON HD3200 graphics.
    256MB graphics memory.

It will cover his needs comfortably, as long as it lasts. On paper, it's a bargain. Grabbit!

The specifications you quote are for a cheap sounding laptop, possibly without even a webcam. Avoid. I wouldn't even pay £300 for such a machine.

Ah sorry, the one thing he is not interested in (amazingly) is gaming! So in that case, the Laptop I have selected is then sufficient for music (lots of it - MP3's and burning CDs) watching movies, loading tons of photos and internet browsing and homework then?

    Brilliant!

Sorry, I don't want an Acer but I appreciate all answers!

    Any other comments?

maybe. Depends where from. Can you tell me?

So are you saying the spec I've given for the Toshiba is not enough for his requirements?

    Many thanks for all help.

The bold blue writing in my posts are links.
    The Toshiba is fine.
If you are not bothered about Windows 7 and can live with Vista, you can get a similar Toshiba for around £300....though with 160GB.

Hi Ponkle, no need for any apologies ask anything you need to know

    Just a question though

As you mention photos, is he just going to take the pictures and store them on the laptop, or will he edit them a lot (college course etc?)

If so then you may need something with a little more umpff. For the photo editing then you need as much RAM as you can get, a lot have 3 or 4 gb as standard

If not, then the basic info you have put sounds more than fine for what you say it is needed for

Check out Aldi regularly, they seem to be putting very nice spec laptops on as their bargin of the week/day
