Moral Dilemma - Shower broken just before exchange

We are due to exchange next week and typically our shower pump has lost pressure and is just coming out at a trickle. The pump motor must have gone. Thing is what do we do? DH has trawled the internet for a new one which is going to cost £150 plus and we dont even know if we can fit it ourselves.

Do we get it done regardless or just leave it? Feel bad but it's just a huge hassle and the suppliers may not even be able to get one to us until next week anyway.

So if someone broke down just before leaving would you get it fixed or just leave it?

  • On the evening I moved in to my house in 2007 I found the lights did not work and subsequently discovered there was a problem with the wiring and the previous owners had been using candles for several weeks to avoid repairing the faulty wiring! This left me sitting in the dark until I could find an electrician and found the house required complete rewiring. They had also carefully balanced window blinds onto broken brackets which, when touched, crashed to the floor taking a considerable amount of plaster with them. At least discuss the position with your buyers. It is horrible finding something so important does not work.

I'd offer them money to do the job themselves. £!50 is fine as they will get a new shower, reasonable that they cover the fitting cost.

New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.

How are you going to shower for the next week if your shower is broken?
If they were good throughout the sale then I would fix it.
If they were a pain the backside then I would leave it broken.
  • I wish you were my vendor - at least you thought about fixing it. When I completed on the house, I found out that the shower pump was broken. Had to buy a shower pump and asked a handyman to fix it for me.

Luckily I wasn't planning to move in until 3 weeks later but I would have appreciated it if my vendor has at least told me about it. Imagine moving all your stuffs over, cleaning, unpacking and finally a shower - and the last moment, realising you can't have one.....

Get it fix or as the post above, offer them the money to do the job.
  • Thanks everyone. Isn't it just typical that something like this happens just before exchange? aargh!! They've been very nice throughout but it's the sheer hassle of getting hold of one and getting it fitted when we're trying to pack and everything else really.

We have a bath too of course so have just been having baths in the interim.

Will speak to the estate agent on Monday and take it from there.

the shower pump will be wired into a spur some were, airing cupboard?, it will have a fuse same as a plug, may be blown? worth a look....

ps, a spur is like a plug socket but the wire goes directly into it and the fuse is on the front behind a little panel that pull's out or unscrews..
