Double Oven, does it need a base unit?

Hi All,
Quick question. I'm looking at a new kitchen and was planning to purchase my units from Howdens, but get my appliances separately.
I'm in need of a new integrated oven, but was wondering if a double oven requires a base unit, or does it just sit on the floor? It'll have a worktop on top, units either side and a plinth on the bottom, so nothing else will be viewable.
Cheers

normally yes, it needs its own unit.
you could make a small simple base for it to sit on, behind the plinth, but you wont save that much money.Get some gorm.0 -
Cheers mate. Was hoping it maybe just sits on legs like the base units.0

Sorry ormus but your wrong there...No seperate oven unit required (single oven would..but not doubles).
Built-under double ovens you usually screw a bracket (supplied with oven - runs the depth of the oven parallel to floor at plinth height) to the units either side and then the oven slides in on the brackets with your plinth continuing along under the front of the oven. Note: To ensure the units are exactly the right space apart (usually 600mm) with sides running parallel.
Our plinth is notched out under the oven door to allow the oven door to hinge properly.
With ours there is a heat deflector which slots in at the top front of the oven and is screwed to the worktop above which are the only screws holding it in place i think.
Prob we had was we only had a unit on one side due to a strange layout involving a diagonal wall so we had to use a full unit height end panel instead (lots of extra hidden brackets to floor, wall and worktop). If your having a hob directly above then get that fitted into place ensuring fixed gas pipework will clear the oven.0 -
Btw , make sure you buy a "built-under" oven ...and not a "built-in" ..subtle difference as the latter slots into a unit at eye-level!0

I can second this, no separate unit required.0 -
Cheers for that guys. Got a single oven atm which is in a oven base unit with a box bit underneath, but the money saven on the new base unit can go towards the double oven!
Cheers for the advice on built-in / built-under, didn't know that!0 -
If i recall correctly i think the built-in eye-level ovens are bigger (?) .
Just be aware that a big Christmas turkey might not fit in either ovens of a double! That caught us out the first christmas we hosted with the oven and emergency plans were made to cook it elsewhere the night before! Better to cook two smaller one's!0 -
not wrong. i said "normally".Get some gorm.0

Didn't come across any requiring a unit when we were built-under double oven hunting...
perhaps there are exceptions but i don't think a unit is "normal" unless it's a single oven. Worth checking the installation instructions in the user manual..most can be downloaded from manufacturer.0 -
I have built under fridge, freezer and dish washer. None of those require a base unit either."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
